CLINTON, Miss. (WTJV) — Clinton officials are telling residents to get rid of standing water around their homes to try to help prevent mosquitoes.
Experts say mosquitoes breed in standing water, so eliminating it can help in reducing the problem.
Clinton officials said killing mosquito larvae before they can hatch is the most effective method of mosquito eradication.
The Clinton Public Works Department said they have free Larvicide tablets for residents. Larvicide tablets treat areas of standing water to kill mosquito larvae before they can mature.
Zika virus has been a major concern for health officials. Also, The Mississippi State Department of Health said that Hinds County has a unusually large number of mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus.
To combat these threat of mosquito-borne illnesses, Clinton's Public Works Department is working to eliminate mosquitoes in the area and to educate the public about the issue.
For anyone who wants a larvicide tablet, they can be picked up at 525 Springridge Road each weekday from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Residents should also wear mosquito repellent and follow these steps below provided by the American Mosquito Control Association.
