Apple targets students and travelers in new iPad Pro ads

Apple continued its new ad campaign series for the iPad Pro today by publishing some new ads that showcase how the tablet is the perfect laptop replacements.

The three new ads are aimed at students and frequent travelers by highlighting the iPad Pro's lightness, ability to carry textbooks and notes on the same screen, as well as its all day battery life that can keep you entertained on a 12 hour flight. Like the previous set of iPad Pro ads, the quirky new videos feature tweets from real people with real problems.

iPad Pro vs. Wacom Tablet for Digital Drawing

For digital art I own a small Wacom USB drawing tablet (and for the sake of transparency, I am an amateur artist and not a professional so this is a review for the average Joe or Jane). I received it as a gift two birthdays ago and it came bundled with full versions of Corel Painter Lite and Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 as well as trials of other drawing software, Nik® Color Efex Pro™ 3 WE6, which I didn't use, and AutoDesk Sketchbook Express, which I did use. I also downloaded a couple of trials for marker-art software, Manga Studio, and one I can't recall.

I also recently had the opportunity to compare the Wacom with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil for drawing. This review covers the pros and cons of both.

The benefit of the Wacom tablet is its compatibility with multiple desktop software suites and the option to try out software before purchasing. I particularly like using Corel Painter Lite as I can do watercolor techniques, oil techniques and sketching with a wide variety of effects to apply. The painting has the feel of real paint, with control of brush strokes, brush width, brush tips, opacity and color. Corel Painter Lite has the most brushes, pencils, pens, techniques and effects available compared to any of the software I used for PC or iOS. AutoDesk Sketchbook Express had a great marker and pen tool selection if you are into comic or marker art.  The Wacom stylus is programmable for shortcuts and you can use the top as an eraser. You can also use the drawing pad and its buttons, along with the stylus, as a mouse.  The main difficulty with using the Wacom is  hand-eye coordination; it's disconcerting to look at the screen several inches away from where you are drawing w hen you are used to painting and drawing directly on paper and canvas. It's something that you can adjust to, but it's hard to get accurate lines.

Hand-eye coordination is not a problem on the iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil. This clever little device makes drawing on the glass screen seem natural and fluid and I was very impressed with how it makes pencil strokes. You can turn it on its side and do shading or lines very much like a real pencil. It's so authentic you can almost believe you are hearing the graphite scratching the paper. However, you do not have the same programming options as with the Wacom stylus. The iPad Pro and Apple Pencil are fantastic drawing devices but the shortcoming here is the availability of decent software. I had access to Adobe Draw, Paper and PenUltimate. PenUltimate is really just a notebook app and is handy for handwriting notes on the iPad Pro but that's about it. I didn't feel like Paper was an easy to use app but I can see how it would be good for basic sketches, notes and flow-charts. That left me with Adobe Draw. Adobe Draw did not have anything close to the functionality of Corel Painter Lite. It is fine for basic sketching or touching up and adding flourishes to photos but it is too basic for me. I played with it for awhile and eventually did some tutorials, thinking I was missing something, but it turned out I wasn't.

Essentially I found the iPad Pro to be a great device for on-the-go sketching but nowhere near as useful as my Wacom and laptop. I periodically checked the App Store for drawing and painting apps compatible with iPad Pro and read reviews about apps but found nothing that was as full-functioning as I wanted. While the iPad Pro is great in a lot of ways it falls victim to the same issues as all tablets when a user needs full-functionality: it just can't compare to a desktop.

NAMPA — Jack Conger is on his way to a classroom on a help call. The phone is ringing. A stack of fixed tablets are ready to be delivered back to their owners. And, a student waits outside the CatSquad office at Columbia High School for help with their Dell tablet.

March 17 is a busy day for the CatSquad students, who are responsible for providing tech support to the 1,300 students and 100 teachers and administrators at the school.

Twenty students and their teacher are pioneering a new internship class based out of Columbia High School centered around technology support.

The class began this school year when the Nampa school district gave each one of Columbia High School's 1,300 students a Dell tablet for a more personalized learning experience. Since tablets sometimes break, can't connect to the internet, or won't turn on, someone has to know how, and be available, to fix those problems.

Thus, the CatSquad was born.

The CatSquad — named after the school's mascot, the Wildcat — is housed in an office on the second floor of the high school and staffed for every class period of the school day.

Because Nampa's three high schools share students, anywhere from two to seven junior and senior students from Nampa, Columbia and Skyview high schools are available for their peers to walk in with their tablets and say, "I have a problem."

Anthony Thacker often gets complaints of Wi-Fi connectivity, or lack thereof, and four other CatSquad members overlapped words of agreement.

Sometimes the attachable keyboards won't attach.

"Broken screens are a problem way more often than they should be," said Pablo Lopez.

Jared Day, a junior, even received a tablet that had been run over.

"You can't fix that," he said with a chuckle.

If a student needs their device fixed, they come up to the second floor with a hall pass and their device to talk to one of the CatSquad members. Outside the CatSquad office are two tables where students plug in their malfunctioning device for a diagnosis.

When the issue is relatively simple, such as connecting to Wi-Fi, one of the CatSquad students will make the fix. Sometimes, the fix is quick enough that the student just waits for their device to get working, then heads back to class.

If the problem is out of their knowledge realm and ability, the students will send the tablet to the district's IT department or Dell for repairs. The CatSquad member will also provide the student with a loaner device until their device is fixed.

Once the device is fixed, a CatSquad member will get the device back to the student and return the loaned device to inventory. The CatSquad is responsible for the loaner inventory, but the district also has access to that information to avoid theft problems.

One of the struggles at the beginning of the academic year was finding a balance of authority between the students and district administrators, instructor John Lucas said. The students needed to have enough access to the school's Internet network and tablet software to do their job, but not too much to violate privacy or be a risk to security.

"You have to be trusted and you do your work," Thacker said.

In order to be in the class, prospective CatSquad members have to have taken several of Lucas' basic classes, such as desktop repair. The students also have to have good grades and prove reliability in not just his class but other classes, as well. Lucas will ask other teachers about a student's performance in class.

Forty students applied to take the class in the 2018-19 academic year. Lucas accepted 17.

"They're pretty proud of being accepted," Lucas said.

The CatSquad internship class is part of the Nampa school district's Career Technical Education Program, which aims to equip students with career-ready practices and skills.

Thacker plans to go to Boise State University for a four-year degree in computer science.

Lopez hopes to attend Northwest Nazarene University for electrical or mechanical engineering.

Day also wants to study computer science at Boise State University. He already has a part-time job with the city of Meridian's IT department. Day wants to eventually have a job doing network maintenance for a city as a network administrator.

Conger is already halfway through completing requirements for his PC Pro Certificate, which testifies to someone's technical knowledge of such areas as windows system management, troubleshooting and mobile devices.

"I've learned about customer service," Conger said about the internship class. "That's the main priority."

CatSquad members also gain technical knowledge of the devices, such as how the hardware of the devices and the district-specific software the devices use rather than the generic windows software.

"If they're on the job, it's the same thing," Lucas said.

Sometimes the students are called to a classroom to fix a projector, or to diagnose a student's tablet while they are in class because the student can't leave the class.

"It's not super structured," Day said. "You don't have someone standing over your shoulder. That makes (the class) more real."

Kindle vs iPad: Best Tablet Readers For Travel

Kindle or iPad — which is the best tablet for travel?  I find myself asking this question every time I pack. And to be honest, I feel a little indulgent and guilty sometimes for having two tablet e-readers, but they're both great for different reasons. My decision over the best tablet to bring is usually based on the length of the flight, and if I'm in more of a movie-mode or reading-mode.

Most planes have a great selection of entertainment, but every once in awhile I'll hop on a connecting flight, look up at a fabric-backed seat, and be completely bummed that it's tech-free.  But now that Netflix allows downloading movies and episodes to watch without wifi, and Kindle Unlimited and Amazon Prime offer a never-ending library of books and magazines right at your fingertips, it is so easy to pack your own entertainment.

Which brings me back to my original question – which is the best tablet to pack?  Let's look at the pros and cons for both.

Kindle vs iPad – Reading Magazines

There are two compact iPad models out right now perfect for travel – the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and the iPad Mini 4.  The biggest difference between the two (besides price) is the quality of the display and the processor speed.  The iPad Pro also has more speakers, but let's be honest, most of us are using headphones anyway (especially on a plane or public place).  So, for comparing the iPad to the Kindle, I'm just going to go over the basic pros and cons below.

The Kindle is a bit more limited in the type of entertainment, but as an e-reader, it can't be beat. When I want to go on a digital detox during a trip, this is what I bring as I can download all of my favorite books without having the temptation of social media and email in the background.

No screen glare, easier on the eyes for reading

Really long battery life. Can last for up to two weeks, so you will likely not even have to charge it on your trip.

If you're looking to upgrade, which one do you splurge on?  If you have both, which one do you bring?

Overall, if you're a voratious reader and don't want the distraction (or temptation) of being online to check email or social, Kindle Paperwhite is the best choice.  It is so light, I have no problem holding it up with one hand.  And it is super slim and easy to tuck into any carry-on bag or purse (though, I would recommend getting a screen protector for it as I already scratched mine)  As I see more people looking for a digital detox during their vacation, the Kindle is the one electronic device I think you could get away with.

On the other hand, if you want to spend your flight-time or vacation catching up on your latest Netflix series, than the iPad is definitely the way to go. Personally, I love them both.

Why can't Google Assistant be installed on a tablet?

Google Assistant is now available on a wide range of smartphones, with more scheduled to receive it in the weeks ahead. There have already been some complaints about another problem: the app will not be available for tablets.

In theory, tablets could have potential…

I don't need to tell you that there are many types of tablets, some of which are specifically aimed at people who use them on the go and others for more sedentary users (generally tablets measuring around 10-inches or more). The latter category is the most popular one, which explains why tablets are replacing computers in many areas.

I'm disappointed that Google Assistant won't be coming to tablets.

Google Assistant fulfills several functions, such as managing your calendar to managing your home appliances. For it to work well, it has to know as much as possible about you: your habits, your preferences, etc. A tablet would enable Google Assistant to source a lot of information on you and see which items you use the most often at home (for example, electricity). Additionally, you will have configured your accounts so it can always access information and perform tasks for you.

Google Assistant wants to know more about you so it can help you. With your phone, it can access your contacts (not everyone has their telephone contacts in their tablet) as well as your GPS history/journeys. This is much harder with a tablet as, not only does the tablet need 4G but you would then have to take it with you everywhere.

In terms of business, Google is obviously aiming for as many people as possible to use their products. Smartphones are (much) more popular and mobile than a tablet, so it's better suit for this purpose. Of course, Google could be present on both devices by offering a smartphone and tablet service, but it hasn't done that - for now, anyway. Google has confirmed to Android Police that their Assistant will not be available on tablet, but that could change with time.

Perhaps there is a technical explanation, but these haven't been discussed (as far as I know).

In short, Google wants to offer their service to as many people as possible and to make the service as efficient as possible. Tablets don't serve that purpose. Samsung's artificial intelligence, Bixby, will be an interesting alternative to Google Assistant when it comes out, but Bixby will only available on current and future Samsung devices for now.

Indiana inmates could have computer tablets by end of year

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana prison officials have proposed providing inmates with computer tablets to help them connect with family and further their educations.

The proposal includes creating a secure network and installing electronic kiosks across nearly two dozen Indiana Department of Correction facilities. Vendor applications are due by April 24. The department hopes to get the program going by the end of the year, agency executive director William Wilson told The Indianapolis Star.

Inmates could access classwork and self-help materials on the tablets. They also could order from the commissary or pay for entertainment. The money from entertainment would help pay for the program. The department hopes a vendor will pay the costs up front, then be reimbursed and earn a profit when inmates buy music and movies. Department officials also could reward good behavior by giving inmates access to entertainment on the tablets.

"Historically, corrections has always been based on consequences," Wilson said, "but what we've learned is that sometimes through positive reinforcement you gain better performance, better behavior."

The tablets likely wouldn't be like the iPads or Kindles common at homes. Companies develop special tablets and software for use in prisons that are more secure and can be controlled by prison officials.

There are concerns, though. Indiana Public Defender Council spokeswoman Kristin Casper worries inmates might face added fees for tablets.

"There's so much potential for this to be abused," Casper said. "That's our biggest issue with this."

Wilson envisions the tablets making prison tasks easier, such as allowing inmates to contact their cases managers, which now is done with paper and pen. Substance abuse and anger management programming can be offered on the tablets, too.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 review: The best Android tablet you can buy will cost you

Apple's (AAPL) original iPad was the standard-bearer for tablets. But a lot has changed since the company debuted its first slate 7 years ago. Straight-up tablets are falling out of style, as consumers increasingly turn toward productivity laptop-tablet hybrid devices like, well… the $599 iPad Pro.

Which brings us to Samsung's new Android-powered Galaxy Tab S3. Available March 24 for $599, the Tab S3 is designed to let you use basic productivity tools like Microsoft's (MSFT) Office suite, edit photos using Photoshop Express, draw directly on the device's display using the included S Pen stylu s and, of course, watch movies and browse the web.

But the S3 has stiff competition in the Pro. And while the S3 bests the iPad Pro with with its stunning display, comfortable keyboard and included stylus, it falls short in others like battery life and audio. And its hefty price tag doesn't help.

An entertainment powerhouse

The Tab S3's design is attractive but derivative, hewing closely to the look of the company's Galaxy S7 smartphone from its aluminum edges to its glass-coated rear panel. The slate is roughly the same size as Apple's iPad Pro, save for a tenth of an inch or so here or there.

The most important part of any tablet, though, is its display, and that's where the S3 shines. The Tab's 9.7-inch, Super AMOLED screen, as all similar Samsung panels, produces vibrant colors and when you add in its HDR (high dynamic range) compatibility, which increases a display's contrast ratio so you can see a wider range of hues, images practically jump off the screen.

Everything from app icons and text to movies and photos look absolutely stunning. Next to the iPad Pro, the Tab S3 offers brighter, more vivid colors and more detailed images. The difference between the tablets' panels is so striking that similar photos look completely different on the S3 and iPad.

Samsung has also made a lot of noise about the Galaxy Tab S3's surround sound speakers. Tuned by AKG by Harman, the speakers produce loud, clear, crisp audio. Whether you're watching a movie or listening to your favorite guilty pleasure (late '00s pop-punk), the S3 offers excellent audio quality.

The iPad Pro, though, is just a bit better. Bass drums hit harder, high notes sound higher and vocals come through cleaner. If your main concern is listening to music with your tablet, the iPad Pro is the easy choice. For most people, though, the Tab S3's display quality will trump the iPad's audio.

Productivity at a price

To ensure the Tab S3 isn't just another entertainment tablet, Samsung added a magnetic keyboard cover to the mix. That keyboard, however, isn't included with the price of the tablet, so you'll have to shell out an extra $129 if you want to get the full experience. That's a pricey proposition for something that adds basic typing functionality. Of course, Apple charges $149 for its Smart Keyboard cover, which is also a lot to ask of customers.

That said, Samsung's keyboard is surprisingly well built. Keys are nicely spaced and offer plenty of travel. Touch typists used to hammering out emails on their laptops will probably find the keyboard a bit cramped, though. I often found myself having to readjust my hands, but the experience is worlds better than using the mushy keys on Apple's Smart Keyboard.

Thankfully, Samsung was smart enough to include its wonderful S Pen stylus as part of the S3's package. The company says it narrowed the top of the stylus to 0.7 mm in order to make the writing experience feel more like a ballpoint pen. And you know what? It does. And while it's a great writing and drawing tool, it doesn't offer the kind of helpful functionality of the S Pen, which lets you quickly open a blank note, see all of your notes, capture a part of the display and translate text on-the-fly via its Air Command app.

Power and more power

Samsung's Tab S3 is powered by quad-core Qualcomm processor that provides more than enough oomph to handle all of your daily tasks. I noticed a bit of slowdown when I was typing in the Microsoft Office app, but beyond that I didn't see any issues while using the S3. Apple's iPad Pro, meanwhile, is smooth as silk all the way through.

When it comes to battery life the Tab S3 should last you plenty of time. I've been using the S3 for about a week and I saw the battery life trickle away faster when I pumped the display brightness all the way and was streaming Netflix. Doing the same on the iPad Pro didn't impact the battery life nearly as much. Overall, the Pro's battery is certainly stronger than the Tab S3's, but Samsung� ��s slate is no slouch.

The tablet to get?

The S3 really is a fantastic tablet, but is it the one to get? If you're not already an Apple user and aren't beholden to its myriad services like iTunes and iMessage, then the Tab S3 is is an easy choice. My one problem with the S3? Its price. At $599 for the slate itself and an extra $129 for the keyboard, Samsung's tablet is ridiculously expensive. For that price you could get a comparable Chromebook or, for about $100 more, Microsoft's Surface Pro 4, which offers the functionality of a full Windows 10 PC.

If you've got a wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket and really want a new Android tablet, you can't do much better than the Tab S3. But if you want a slate that's equal parts entertainment and productivity, you might want to consider the Surface.

Emirates To Let First & Business Class Passengers “Gate Check” Laptops Under Electronics Ban

The electronics ban that will prohibit the carriage of electronic devices larger than a smartphone on flights to the US will go into effect on March 25, 2017. Understandably, this is getting quite a bit of coverage, since it can potentially impact thousands of travelers who will fly through the affected cities.

Emirates is probably one of the airlines that will suffer the most under this electronics ban, due to their size and them being based in Dubai (DXB), one of the cities affected. They fly to 12 US destinations, with a number of them having multiple daily flights. Emirates released a video soon after the electronics ban was made public, promoting their in-flight entertainment system ICE.

But now it looks like Emirates might be going one step further in minimizing the disruption the ban might bring passengers. The Department of Homeland Security does not specify how the ban needs to be implemented, as long as the end result of "no devices larger than a smartphone in the cabin" is achieved. To that end, Emirates will reportedly allow passengers to take their larger-than-smartphone devices past security, and then collect them right before boarding commences. Bloomberg reports:

The state-owned carrier is planning to permit devices affected by the ban within the security perimeter to allow passengers, particularly those flying in premium seats, to use laptops and tablets until the last possible moment, it said in an email. The airline will then take the items for storage in the cargo hold until arrival.

Obviously, this doesn't eliminate a number of potential problems with this ban. Passengers still won't be able to watch their own content on their tablets, and they still won't be able to work on their laptops. Concerns for theft and damages to devices also won't go away, nor will hazards that portable batteries in cargo hold might pose. Additionally, this special accommodation is likely to be limited to Business and First Class passengers, due to the logistical efforts required.

But for those seated up front aiming to squeeze productivity every last minute out of their time on the ground, this is one solution. If Emirates is going to stow away all the devices in one dedicated spot, perhaps it might act as an added peace of mind for those concerned about checking these valuables. Presumably, this will also make retrieval easier once the plane lands, which I think will be the most noticeable benefit for me.

The United Arab Emirates is not part of the UK ban, so passengers on UK-bound Emirates flight can continue to bring their electronics onboard.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet 7″ Review: Inexpensive but Good

Finding a tablet under $50 isn't hard, but finding a good one in that same price range is more of a challenge. The Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet 7″ fits the bill. It's pocketable and runs a full version of Android. How well does it function as an ebook reader with additional features? Read on to find out.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet 7″

At 7.4 by 4.2 by 0.4 inches, the NOOK Tablet 7″ won't easily fit in a front pocket, but it's fine for a back pocket; just be careful to not sit on it. And at just a bit over half a pound, it's about the weight of a paperback, and much more portable than a hardback.

The design is generic: a black plastic rectangle with rounded corners. Still, the many curves makes it comfortable to hold. The size contributes to this, as this is a computer that's very easy to hold in one hand.

The NOOK Tablet 7″ is well constructed, but it does slightly flex when opposite corners are twisted. This certainly isn't an excessive amount of flexing, but it's a reminder that budget tablets like this one aren't particularly rugged. Still, we've dropped our test unit a time or two onto a hardwood floor, and it's showing no signs of damage, so it certainly isn't fragile.

Screen

NOOK Tablet 7″ as Ebook Reader

A typical problem of budget tablets is that they have terrible screens. Fortunately, that's not the case with this Barnes & Noble model at all. It has a 7-inch display at a 1024 by 600 pixel resolution. That works out to be a pixel density of 171 ppi. These numbers translate to a better than adequate experience when reading books, and an acceptable one when watching video, playing games, etc.

Some people feel that a phone makes an adequate ereader, and don't see the value in a 7-inch tablet. It's worth noting that the screen area of the NOOK is a bit over 20 square inches, while the iPhone 7's is just 9.4 sq. in. That's a lot more reading area.

This is an IPS screen so it offers wide viewing angles. And the backlight is bright enough to make it easy to read out of doors, just not in direct sunlight. In fact, the backlight is so strong those who want to read in bed might consider getting a third-party application to further dim the screen.

The aspect ratio is 16:9, so it's shaped more like an HDTV than a page of paper. When held horizontally this is ideal for reading two pages of a book, or watching a TV show.

Ports, Buttons, Camera, and Speakers

Happily, the NOOK Tablet 7″ includes a microSD card slot, allowing the storage capacity of this device to be expanded. This isn't really important for those who just want to hold ebooks on this device, as the built-in storage capacity is plenty for that, but those who want to install additional applications will want a microSD card. Even an inexpensive one will add quite a bit of capacity, and the Android OS makes this relatively simple.

A micro-USB port is located on the top of this computer, making it easier to use this device while it's connected to its charger. But this port can do much more. We successfully tested it with a micro-USB flash drive, and then went so far as to connect it to a USB hub, allowing a keyboard, mouse, and flash drive to be used simultaneously.

The Power and Volume Up/Down buttons on this Barnes & Noble device are all arranged along the right edge. This makes them convenient whether the NOOK Tablet 7″ is being used in portrait or landscape orientation.

The rear-facing 2 MP camera of the NOOK Tablet 7″ is actually surprisingly good, within its limitations. The cameras in budget tablets are often dreadful, but the one Barnes & Noble used is capable of taking good pictures in well-lighted conditions. Even pics in somewhat dim lighting are usable. With no flash, this isn't the camera for low light pics.

Selfies taken with the front-facing camera aren't bad either, whether indoors or out.

There's a single speaker on the back of the NOOK, which doesn't put out very much volume. It's usable to watch video or play games in a quiet environment, but anyplace more noisy will require a pair of headphones. Fortunately, a 3.5mm headset port is included.

The Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet 7″ has a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor at its heart, with 1 GB of RAM. This is a low-end configuration of the type one would expect from a sub-$50 device like this one.

What it means in real-world use is that the computer is just a bit slow. Not unusable slow by any means, but users shouldn't look for the lightning fast response times offered by tablets that cost 10x as much. Instead, they should expect newly opening applications to take a second or two to be ready to go. Another good indication of performance is that the device takes about a minute to boot up after being completely shut down. A little slow, but acceptable.

The NOOK Tablet 7″ comes with 8 GB of built-in storage, but a large percentage of that permanently taken up by the operating system and bundled applications, leaving just 3.34 GB of storage available to users. As mentioned earlier, this is probably plenty for most people who are just looking for an ebook reader that can check email and do a bit of web access. People who want more should invest in a microSD card; even an $8 one would make this computer more useful.

Unlike rival Amazon, Barnes & Noble made almost no modifications to the version of Android running on its tablet. Aside from a few ebook applications and widgets tied into the B&N ecosystem, this is a stock version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, with full access to the Google Play store for apps, ebooks, etc. Complete support for Chromecast is even included.

The application for reading Barnes & Noble ebooks is quite usable. Font sizes can be adjusted, as can margins and text justification. The color of the background can be changed, but this app doesn't yet support filtering out blue light to help readers fall asleep.

The only real flaw in this system is that one cannot download any ebook without a credit card. Just trying the apps out with free titles requires typing in a credit card number.

This device definitely isn't tied to B&N's ecosystem. Our tests confirmed it works just as well with Google Books.

Battery Life

Barnes & Noble promises that this NOOK can "go for up to 7 hours of reading, web browsing and video watching." We put the tablet through our torture test of continuously playing video over a Wi-Fi connection, and it lasted 6 hours and 12 minutes before automatically shutting itself off.

This isn't outstanding, but it's quite reasonable. Turning off Wi-Fi for long reading sessions should significantly push back the time before needing a recharge. On the other hand, bumping up the backlight to read outdoors will likely shorten the battery life.

The Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet 7″ is an easily portable ebook reader that can also handle social networking, web sites, and casual games. Given its small size and modest speed, it's really not up to much more though. Still, the full version of Android gives it flexibility, within its limitations.

At $49.99, it's easy to find this product to be good value. It's closest competitor is probably the Amazon Fire HD 8, which sells for $89.99.

‘Anaemia, the biggest killer of UP women, on the rise’

Lucknow: Anaemia has recorded an increase in the state, as per the recently released fourth National Family Health Survey. This, despite lakhs being spent in the state on improving haemoglobin levels in women.

Anaemia is a condition known to be retarding a person's efficiency besides putting his/her life at risk in case of a disease. Against 49% in 2005-06, anaemia in women in the 15-49 year age group increased to 52.4% in 2015-16.

This means that one in two women is anaemic. The pattern was observed in both urban and rural areas. In case of men, a marginal improvement was recorded (from 24.3% to 23.7%) but the fact remains that one in four men in state is anaemic.

The trend is against the general improvement recorded across India for the same period. Anaemia among women in the 15-49 year age group across the country has decreased from 55.3% in 2005-06 to 53% in NFHS-4. As per annual health survey 2014, which shows that the problem is rampant in UP, 80 % people in 0-59 years age group suffer from anaemia. An average of 92% adolescent (10-17 year) girls were anaemic. A deeper look at data revealed that anaemia in adolescent girls was highest in Mau with 99.8% prevalence while in 15 other districts of UP, it was above 95%. Women rights activist Dr Neelam Singh said that anaemia was the biggest preventable killer of women in UP. "More than 55,000 women in UP die during child birth each year. Of various reasons, anaemia alone accounts for 28% of the deaths which totals to 15,400 deaths per year or 42 deaths every day. Anaemia is a matter of women's right to life," she said. Mission director, national health mission, UP, Alok Kumar said, "Anaemia is an important factor in women's health yet consumption of iron and folic acid tablets is low. The ministry of health has increased the supply of tablets per person from 180 days to 360 days now. The idea is that even if women miss the pills, the duration will work to raise their levels."
