Giving inmates tablet computers designed to streamline Allen County Jail operations, reduce inmate problems

Most Allen County Jail inmates now will receive use of a personal tablet computer, which will give them access to documents and materials the jail legally must provide and allow them to work on rehabilitating themselves, read religious scripture or ebooks, and make phone calls or send short messages to people outside the jail.

The Inspire Inmate Communications Devices are provided at no cost to taxpayers and will be given to inmates as an incentive for good behavior, Allen County Sheriff David Gladieux said in a news release.

Other correctional facilities that have implemented similar programs have reported significant reductions in inmate assaults on jail officers and other inmates as well as a decrease in inmate suicide attempts, the news release said.

Currently, more than 700 Allen County Jail inmates have a tablet assigned to them, the news release said. The sheriff's department partnered with Global Tel Link to provide the tablets.

"This decision was not taken lightly, as the sheriff's intention is not to pamper inmates or make their stay more enjoyable," the news release said.

Providing inmates with paperless access to materials the jail legally must provide will reduce strain on jail employees and resources and also will minimize the risk of possible lawsuits, the news release said.

Tablets won't be provided to inmates who have destroyed one previously, have a history of destroying jail property or who are assessed as too mentally ill to be responsible for a tablet, the news release said.

The only free apps on the tablet will be for documents the jail most provide access to and for a calculator, the news release said.

Many other features available on the tablets will be sold on a subscription basis, with rates available in seven-day, 14-day and 30-day options, the news release said. The subscriptions will cover services such as music, games and ebooks.

Prices range from $1.49 plus tax for a seven-day ebooks subscription to $24.99 plus tax for a 30-day music subscription, the news release said.

The messaging feature will be a "simplified and restricted form of email," the news release said. Each message, which can contain as many as 2,000 letters and characters, costs the inmate 25 cents, no matter whether the message is sent or received.

A person outside the jail must initiate the messaging contact with inmate by setting up an account at www.connectnetwork.com, the news release said.

In the future, friends and family will be able to send photos and 15-second videos to their family member or friend in jail at a cost of 25 cents per photo and $1 for each video clip, the news release said. The photos and video clips will be reviewed by jail staff before the inmate can receive them. Inmates won't be able to send out photos or videos. The phone calling feature on the tablets operates just like the wall phones at the jail and will carry the same costs and restrictions, the news release said.

In the future, the tablets possibly may offer movie streaming, commissary ordering, news feeds and video visitation, the news release said.

Tablets in jail help educate inmates, lead to drop in behavior problems

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

WYANDOTTE COUNTY -- Life behind bars is not meant to be easy but finding productive activities for dozens of inmates to do isn't either.

"You only have two TVs and 40 inmates, you're going to fight over television. So if you have something else to keep you busy, something else to keep your mind going, other than reading the same books over and over this is a great incentive," Deputy Terence Belcher said.

Dep. Belcher said since the Wyandotte County Jail provided its inmates educational tablets back in June, life in jail has become more manageable.

"We wrote a ticket every day without the tablets so the behavior rose. We had a riot a while ago; the tablets weren't here yet but once they got here the disciplinary process has decreased and they have more to do," he said.

The tablets were bought using funds from the inmate phone system and contain different educational apps that inmates must complete in order to access lighter features such as music and movies.

"One of the most successful ones I know so far is the GED. They can actually take tests. They won`t get their GED but it prepares them for the program so once they are released out of here they can continue the GED program," Dep. Belcher said.

One of the biggest take aways has been how the tablets have led to fewer violent incidents.

"We have guys that have ADD or even other types of disabilities and these types of tablets will keep them engaged that way they don`t have to run around and, I`m going to say, harass other inmates or staff here," he said.

And with fewer incidents and more to do, the hope is the tablets will spark a positive change for those behind bars.

"It actually helps our job a lot especially violation wise and also bonding wise because you have guys that have issues understanding the apps so that will help the officer bond or have a rapport with the inmate and that way we can help them with the apps," Dep. Belcher said.

The apps are cleaned and checked once a week to ensure they have not been compromised. The apps also do not give inmates access to the internet or social media sites such as Facebook.

The tablets run with Edovo.

Pill packaging causes problems for older people, according to new study

Older people find it difficult to access their medicines due to poorly-designed packaging, according to a new study.

Kim Notenboom of Utrecht University, was on Wednesday defending her PhD thesis promoting patient-friendly medicine and packaging, alongside a symposium on the subject.

According to the NOS broadcaster, she asked elderly people and adolescents to try to break through 12 tablets. She found the older people only succeeded one in three times, while almost all who participated had practical problems with using the medicines that could affect their health.

She told the broadcaster: '[The pharmaceutical industry] only pays attention to the safety, efficacity and quality of the drugs. User friendliness is almost never studied, but this can certainly have an effect on their working and on safety.

'If a patient can only take medicines when a neighbour helps, this will cause problems when the neighbour is on holiday.'

The CBG medicine evaluation board recognised that there is a problem, and is helping draft a directive to ensure medicines for older people are easier to use.

Pope promises never to pardon priests convicted of abuse and admits church too slow in facing up to the problem

21 September 2017 | by Christopher Lamb Francis admitted he had made a mistake with softening the sentence of abusive priest, Inzoli, and said he had learnt from this

Pope Francis says he will never pardon priests convicted of sexual abuse while admitting the Church waited too long before taking the matter seriously.

Talking during his first ever meeting with the papal abuse commission today (21 September), the Pope said there can be no place in the priesthood for those who harm children and that he had learnt from his own mistakes in handling such cases.

Francis met the group for an hour and rather than speaking from a prepared speech gave 20 minutes of off-the-cuff remarks.

One of the 14 members of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors present at the meeting was Baroness Hollins, a professor psychiatry and member of the House of Lords.

"He [Pope Francis] said if paedophilia is proven then he will never pardon an ordained priest and that the Church has come late to an understanding of how serous this matter is," she told The Tablet afterwards. "He is completely committed to trying to get the Church to address this properly and he said he felt deeply ashamed about what has happened."

The Pope faced criticism earlier this year when it emerged he had softened a sentence of laicisation against Mauro Inzoli, 67, an abusive priest in the Diocese of Crema. Inzoli has since been laicised.

During his meeting with the commission the Pope admitted this was a mistake, confessing that he thought at the time he was dealing with matter in "the most benevolent way." Francis added, however, that he learnt from this and would never do it again.

"Whoever is sentenced for sexual abuse of children can turn to the Pope for pardon," but he stressed he had "never signed one of these and will never sign."

Describing paedophilia as an "illness" Francis admitted that the Church had not faced up to the problem of abuse quickly enough: it was, he said, thanks to a number of "prophetic" men and women that the matter was now being taking seriously.

He stressed that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), the Vatican department which acts as a clearing house for abuse case, will be getting more resources. There have been complaints that the congregation has been under staffed and that cases are being processed too slowly.

Baroness Hollins described the Pope's talk as "very honest" adding that she believes he understands the gravity of the problem.

In the official text prepared for the meeting, Francis re-iterated a "zero tolerance" approach on sexual abuse and pointed out he had implemented new laws to hold accountable any bishops and religious superiors who are negligent when handling cases.

"We are ashamed of the abuses committed by holy ministers, who should be the most trustworthy," the Pope explained. "Let me say quite clearly that sexual abuse is a horrible sin, completely opposite and in contradiction to what Christ and the Church teach us."

The papal safeguarding commission is meeting in Rome for its bi-annual general gathering whether they will assess recommendations for improved protection of children and vulnerable adults within the Church, and care for people who have been abused. These will then be submitted to the Pope for his approval. Francis has so far accepted all the group's recommendations.

Earlier this year the commission suffered a blow when Marie Collins, a sexual abuse survivor from Ireland, resigned due to what she said was internal resistance to the group's work by the CDF.

Ms Collins has continued to offer her advice to the Church and was in Rome earlier this month to address a group of recently ordained bishops at a Vatican organised conference.

The sexual abuse scandal has dogged the Church for years with last week the Holy See announcing it was recalling a diplomat from Washington for a "possible violation of laws relating to child pornography images."

Baroness Hollins speaks to Christopher Lamb, following the meeting:

5 Coolest Things On Earth This Week

Researchers at DARPA flew a helicopter with a tablet, a team led by MIT used sound waves to analyze blood for cancer, and scientists in Texas developed artificial skin for robots that could give them a sense of touch. We can't stop the feeling that science is making progress.

Liquid Biopsy

What is it? A team of scientists from MIT and other institutions have used sound waves to test blood. The method could one day help replace tissue biopsies with "liquid biopsy." Doctors could use it to study "the physiology and health of organs that are hard to access, such as the placenta during human pregnancy," said Yoel Sadovsky, director of the Magee-Women's Research Institute and one of the authors of a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Engineering.

How does it work? The team used the device to isolate from blood tiny fluid-filled packets called exosomes that carry RNA, proteins and other molecules around the body and whose contents can indicate cancer and other diseases. Their device first uses sound waves to remove cells and platelets from the blood sample. Next, they send the remainder through a "microfluidic unit, which uses sound waves of a higher frequency to separate exosomes from slightly larger extracellular vesicles."

Why does it matter: "We want to make extracting high-quality exosomes as simple as pushing a button and getting the desired samples within 10 minutes," says Tony Jun Huang, a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Duke University. Existing methods require centrifuges and take as long as a day.

Skin For Robots

Cunjiang Yu, Bill D. Cook Assistant Professor of mechanical engineering, (right) and post-doctoral researcher Hae-Jin Kim have developed "artificial skin"that could robots "a sense of touch." Image credit: University of Houston.

What is it? Researchers at the University of Houston developed a supple, transparent, skin-like electronic material that could give robots "a sense of touch."

Why does it matter? The university reported that the "artificial skin" could allow "a robotic hand to sense the difference between hot and cold, while also offering advantages for a wide range of biomedical devices" like biomedical implants and surgical gloves. Cunjiang Yu, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the university and lead author of the paper, said the material could also interpret and translate gestures in the American Sign Language "to readable letters that a person like me can understand and read."

How does it work? Yu said the team embedded a silicon-based polymer material with nanowires to create the first of skin of this kind without any mechanical structure. The material is "designed to allow the electronic components to retain functionality even after the material is stretched by 50 percent."

Molecular Robots

The University of Manchester reported that "a billion billion of these robots piled on top of each other would still only be the same size as a single grain of salt." Top and above image credits: Getty Images.

What is it? A team at the University of Manchester in the U.K. created the world's first molecular robot capable of building new molecules. The university reported that the "tiny robots, which are a millionth of a millimeter in size, can be programmed to move and build molecular cargo, using a tiny robotic arm.

Why does it matter? "Molecular robotics represents the ultimate in the miniaturization of machinery," said chemistry professor David Leigh, who led the research. "Our aim is to design and make the smallest machines possible. This is just the start but we anticipate that within 10 to 20 years molecular robots will begin to be used to build molecules and materials on assembly lines in molecular factories."

How does it work? The team built each robot from 150 carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen atoms. "To put that size into context, a billion billion of these robots piled on top of each other would still only be the same size as a single grain of salt," the university said. "All matter is made up of atoms and these are the basic building blocks that form molecules," Leigh said. "Our robot is literally a molecular robot constructed of atoms just like you can build a very simple robot out of Lego bricks. The robot then responds to a series of simple commands that are programmed with chemical inputs by a scientist."

Washable Solar Cells

The material could be turned into "wearable solar cells" and power health monitors. Image credit: RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science.

What is it? Scientists from Japan's RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science and the University of Tokyo have developed an ultrathin solar cell that generates power even after being stretched, crushed and soaked in water.

Why does it matter? The material could be turned into "wearable solar cells" and power health monitors, "sensors that record heartbeats and body temperature, for example, providing early warning of medical problems," according to Takao Someya, the leader of the research group. It could also energize a new generation of always on, wearable internet-of-things devices.

How does it work? The team made the solar cell from "thin and flexible organic photovoltaic cells" coated on both sides with stretchable and waterproof films. "We very much hope that these washable, lightweight, and stretchable organic photovoltaics will open a new avenue for use as a long-term power source system for wearable sensors and other devices," says RIKEN's Kenjiro Fukuda.

Autonomous Flight

What is it? Engineers working at DARPA, the U.S. Defense Department's research arm, are building a system that would allow pilots to fly aircraft by means of a tablet computer. Called ALIAS, for Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System, the system already has been used to fly a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter and Cessna 208 Caravan plane.

Why does it matter? Program manager Graham Drozeski says ALIAS could enhance flight safety, enable operations with reduced onboard crew, and "support [the] execution of an entire mission from takeoff to landing, even in the face of contingency events such as aircraft system failures."

How does it work? DARPA says the program "leverage[s] the considerable advances made in aircraft automation systems over the past 50 years, as well as similar advances in remotely piloted aircraft automation."

  • How to Troubleshoot Problems on Your Android Tablet
  • Wouldn't it be great if you could have an avuncular Mr. Wizard type available at a moment's notice to fix your Android tablet? He could just walk in and let you know what the problem is and how to fix it. Then he'd give you a cookie. Never mind that such a thing would be creepy — getting helpful advice is worth it.

    Fixing random and annoying problems

Here are some typical problems you may encounter on your Android tablet and some suggestions for a solution:

General trouble: For just about any problem or minor quirk, consider restarting the tablet by turning it off and then turning it on again. This procedure will most likely fix a majority of the annoying problems you encounter.

Some tablets feature the Restart command on the Device Options menu: Press and hold the Power/Lock key to see this menu. If a Restart command is there, use it to restart the tablet and fix whatever has gone awry.

Check the mobile data connection: As you move about, the mobile-data signal can change. In fact, you may observe the status bar icon change from 4G to 3G to even the dreaded 1X or — worse — nothing, depending on the strength and availability of the cellular data service.

Some advice for random signal weirdness is to wait. Oftentimes, the signal comes back after a few minutes. If it doesn't, the mobile data network might be down, or you may just be in an area with lousy service. Consider changing your location.

Check the Wi-Fi connection: Ensure that the Wi-Fi network is set up properly and working. This process usually involves pestering the person who configured the Wi-Fi router or, in a coffee shop, bothering the cheerful person with the bad haircut who serves you coffee.

Reset the Wi-Fi connection: Perhaps the issue isn't with the tablet at all but rather with the Wi-Fi network. Some networks have a "lease time" after which your tablet might be disconnected. If so, turn off the tablet's Wi-Fi and then turn it on again. That often solves the issue.

For a home or small-office network, Wi-Fi connection problems might be resolved by restarting the router: Unplug the router, wait about a minute, and then plug the router back in. Especially for older routers, this trick solves many connection issues. (Getting a new router is the long-term solution.)

Music is playing and you want it to stop: It's awesome that your tablet continues to play music while you do other things. Getting the music to stop quickly, however, requires some skill. You can access the play controls for the Play Music app from a number of locations. They're found on the lock screen, for example. You can also find them in the notifications drawer.

An app has run amok: Sometimes, apps that misbehave let you know. You see a warning on the screen announcing the app's stubborn disposition. When that happens, touch the Force Close button to shut down the errant app.

    image0.jpg

    image0.jpg

When you don't see a warning or when an app appears to be unduly obstinate, you can shut 'er down the manual way.

Reset the Android tablet software: When all else fails, you can do the drastic thing and reset all tablet software, essentially returning it to the state it was in when it first popped out of the box. Obviously, do not perform this step lightly. In fact, consider finding support before you start the following process:

  • Open the Settings app.

  • Choose Backup and Reset.

On some Samsung tablets, the Backup and Reset item is found on the General tab.

  • Choose Factory Data Reset.

  • Touch the Reset Tablet or Reset Device button.

  • Unlock the tablet.

If you've configured additional screen locks, you need to work the lock before you can proceed.

  • Touch the Erase Everything button or Delete All button to confirm.

All the information you've set or stored on the Android tablet is purged. That includes apps you've downloaded, music, synchronized accounts — everything.

  • Again, do not follow these steps unless you're certain that they will fix the problem or you're under orders to do so from someone in tech support.

You can also choose to reset the tablet's software and erase everything should you ever return or sell your Android tablet. Of course, you probably love your tablet so much that the mere thought of selling it makes you blanch.

    Finding help

Some tablet manufacturers, as well as cellular providers, offer more help than others. Though it's not part of stock Android, some tablets come supplied with the Help app. It may be called Help or Help Center or something similar.

You may find the old, dratted manual lurking in eBook form, which doesn't make it any better. Look for it in the Play Books app.

A Guided Tour app or Tutorial app may also be available, which helps you understand how to work some of the tablet's interesting features.

    Getting support

You can use several sources for support for your Android tablet. So no matter how isolated you feel, help is amply available.

For app issues, contact the developer in the Play Store app.

For issues with the Play Store, contact Google.

Support might also be available from your tablet's manufacturer, such as Asus, Samsung, or LG. Information about support can be found in those random papers and pamphlets included in the box your Android tablet comes in.

When contacting support, it helps to know the device's ID and Android operating system version number:

  • Open the Settings app.

  • On some Samsung tablets, touch the General tab.

  • Choose About Tablet or About Device.

The tablet's model number, as well as the Android version, is listed on the About screen.

    iPad Air 2 review

Update: The iPad Air 2 will see an update to the latest iOS 11 software on September 19, but Apple has now stopped selling the iPad Air 2 and has instead replaced it with a new product, simply entitled the iPad 9.7. You'll still be able to find it from certain retailers, but it's a little more difficult to come across.

We've compared the most recent Apple slate with the iPad Air 2 here.  Plus there are new, even better tablets in Apple's range such as the iPad Pro 9.7 (and Pro 12.9). Despite Apple's recent upgrades, the iPad Air 2 is still a top quality slate and you can get it for a slightly lower price point now.

It was hard to see how Apple could improve on the first iPad Air - arguably the finest tablet ever produced.

And then it went and did so with the iPad Air 2. You can talk all you like about what counts as "too thin" but there's no denying that this new tablet is a feat of engineering that again pushes the limits of what makes a premium slate. Plus, unlike the iPhone 6 Plus it doesn't bend either!

Not only that, but the relentless desire to make the thing thinner has resulted in a better screen too, as the layers that make up the backlight, touchscreen digitizer and LCD screen are so close that Apple now claims there is zero air in between them.

The result? A less reflective display that looks brighter and more colorful. And it really is.

Since its arrival, Apple has launched a new fleet of slates, with the iPad Pro 12.9-inch and iPad Pro 9.7-inch taking up position at the top of the firm's tablet offering.

    iPad Air 2 price
  • Starts at $399 (£379, AU$569)
  • You can now get it for cheaper, but you can't buy from Apple
  • Top spec 128GB, Wi-Fi+4G = $629 (£589, AU$879)
  • The launch of Apple's new Pro slates and iPad 9.7 have resulted in the lowering of the iPad Air 2 price which now starts at $399 (£379, AU$569) - originally $499 (£399, AU$699) - for the 32GB, Wi-Fi only model.

    At the other end of the scale, the 128GB, Wi-Fi+4G variant is now $629 (£589, AU$879) - down from $829 (£659, AU$1,119).

You can't buy the iPad Air 2 directly from Apple anymore, but you can find it at other retailers around the world and if you take your time to search around you'll likely find it even cheaper than the prices above.

    iPad Air 2 review

The new pricing makes the iPad Air 2 a much more approachable offering, and it's still an excellent tablet more than two years on. It may not be a bargain, but it does give better value for money.

I'll get onto the design in a moment - but it's worth noting that the design alone is a good reason to pick up the iPad Air 2. It's super light, amazingly slim and will delight over and over again for the first fortnight of ownership, before you slip back to the standard tech nonchalance that creeps over us all eventually.

Did the iPad Air need to get thinner and more powerful? Not really - but once you actually handle the new iPad Air 2, you'll be sold.

    Design
  • A solid tablet that can be held easily for hours
  • The iPad Air 2's design does warrant the high price
  • At 6.1mm thick, the Apple iPad Air 2 is still one of the slimmest tablets on the market. It's not actually the thinnest, but we're at the point now where fractions of a millimetre really don't matter.

    iPad Air 2 review

The iPad Air 2 achieves extraordinary slimness without sacrifices

    iPad Air 2 specs

    Weight: 437g/444gDimensions: 240 x 169.5 x 6.1mmOS: iOS 8.1 (upgradable to iOS 10.1)Screen size: 9.7-inchResolution: 1536 x 2048CPU: Apple A8XRAM: 2GBStorage: 32GB, 128GBBattery: 8820mAhRear camera: 8MPFront camera: 1.2MP

Thinness for its own sake can be an error - there is a point of diminishing returns where only marginal improvements can be achieved, at the cost of structural integrity, battery life and overall performance - but Apple hasn't reached that point yet.

The iPad Air 2 feels like a very solid tablet that can be held easily for hours without it getting uncomfortable. The iPad Air 2 is hardly a big tablet, but the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is both smaller and lighter with the same size display.

Where the Apple device wins though is the overall packaging. Samsung's option is good, but clearly an assemblage of distinct parts. The plastic back, the larger-bezelled screen and the rim are all competing parts, where the iPad Air 2 is a complete package, smooth and easy to hold in one hand.

I was almost loath to put it in a case - it needs to be protected if you're going to be running it around town, as that back and chamfered edges will scuff up eventually - but if you're going to be a sofa-warrior with your new tablet, the Smart Cover will do just fine and won't obscure the impressive design.

The sad thing here is the loss of the silencing switch, which has departed due to size restrictions.

    iPad Air 2 review

You'll need a cover to protect the iPad from damage

Apple would argue that this is because the new Control Center makes the option available throughout the OS with just a flick of the hand, but in truth I'm really going to miss being able to silence the tablet without even looking.

    iPad Air 2 review

The loss of the mute switch is the only notable part of the button reconfiguration

The power button remains at the top and the volume keys have shuffled a little upwards now free of the silence key, but otherwise the only real design changes are the speaker grill at the bottom of the tablet (now a single row of holes, rather than the two before) and the Touch ID on the home key.

You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Air without a spotter's guide, but the iPad Air 2 has a deeper black bezel which helps enhance the picture - plus it now comes in gold to join space gray and silver.

    iPad Air 2 review

A gold colourway joins space gray and silver

The camera stays where it has been, both front and back, with the new 8MP iSight snapper not jutting out as it does on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The fact no tablet camera needs to be that high res, nor should people be taking pics with a tablet anyway, is something to discuss in another article.

Does the iPad Air 2's design warrant the high price tag? Yes, more than any other tablet on the market. It brings a premium build, quality finish, great looks and while it doesn't need to be this thin, the structure doesn't seem to have had an effect on the actual performance of the tablet, and does add something in the palm.

6 NBA Live 18 Problems & How to Fix Them

With NBA Live 18, Electronic Arts has the most viable alternative to NBA 2K18 ever. Only a slew of NBA Live 18 problems could ruin that.

NBA Live 18 has all the ingredients a good basketball game needs. The title includes all the latest player rosters, with updated graphics, animations and ball handling that look more realistic than they have in previous editions of the game. The One, the new story experience, finally lets you create your own custom character and simulate what it's like to be a National Basketball Association superstar. When not in an official league game, you can venture out to The Streets and play unofficial games. Your reputation in The Streets effects how other players and league officials see you back in The League.

NBA Live 18 launched on September 15th, and though they aren't widespread, some Xbox One and PS4 users are having issues with the game. Here's a breakdown of all the NBA Live 18 problems reported so far. When possible, we've included fixes and workarounds so that you can keep playing.

Read: NBA LIVE 18 Release Date, Details & Features

NBA Live 18 for PS4 Crashes on Some Texts

Some players report that NBA Live 18 for PS4 crashes when they receive in-game text messages related to The One. For now, the issues don't seem to affect all gamers, just those playing on Sony's PS4 and PS4 Pro.

If you've run into this crash on your PS4, report it to Electronic Arts' Technical Problems forum.

    NBA Live 18 Connectivity Problems

Expect NBA Live 18 connectivity problems as gamers get their copy of the title home and all begin trying to play at the same time. These issues should disappear as traffic to EA's servers levels out.

Be sure to check your internet connection to make sure that the connectivity problems you're seeing aren't thanks to your network. Use a smartphone, computer or tablet that's connected to the same network to browse a few websites. If the websites load without issue, the problem is with EA's servers.

If the websites don't load, the problem is with your connection. Reset your router and call your internet provider for more troubleshooting tips.

NBA Live 18 Game Save Transfer Problems

If you played the NBA Live 18 Demo that arrived in August, you have a game save that's storing your progress.

To bring that save over to the final version of the game, you need to link the demo to an EA Origin Account. Next, you must link that same account to your final copy of the game. Right now, it's unclear if the transfer will work after you've already started a new character for The One in the final game.

NBA Live 18 Face Scan Skin Tone Problems

NBA Live 18 face scan problems have continued from the game's demo. The iPhone and Android NBA Live 18 Companion app will successfully scan your face, but sometimes your skin tone doesn't match the face scan. Why this is happening isn't yet clear.

A workaround posted to EA Answers forces you to disconnect from Xbox Live or PlayStation Network. Then, you must go back into the game and manually change your skin tone. Tattoos Disappear

Of all the NBA Live 18 problems reported so far, disappearing tattoos is the most consistent. Tattoos for custom players disappear without warning.

It turns out, face scanning is behind this. Tattoos disappear when you add a face scan to a custom player. This is a bug, but we're not sure when EA will fix it.

NBA Live 18 Franchise Mode Won't Open

Some NBA Live 18 players on Xbox One report that Franchise Mode locks on them when they try to play it from an external hard drive. Restarting the console or creating a new team doesn't fix the problem, unfortunately.

Read: How to Transfer Xbox One Games and Game Saves

You will need to move your game files from your external drive to your Xbox One's internal storage to fix this issue. You can do this from the My Games and Apps area. Select the game and press the Menu button on your controller. Go to the Manage menu and transfer the game to the console and off your external drive.

We'll continue to update this breakdown of NBA Live 18 problems as more gamers share their experiences online and in forums.

Groundbreaking Order-Delivery Software Solution Signals An End to Tablets for Restaurant Delivery Orders

TMCNet: Groundbreaking Order-Delivery Software Solution Signals An End to Tablets for Restaurant Delivery Orders

Groundbreaking Order-Delivery Software Solution Signals An End to Tablets for Restaurant Delivery Orders

orderTalk, Inc., a leading provider of online ordering software and service solutions to the restaurant industry, has developed patent-pending technology that will change the way restaurants receive third-party delivery orders in a revolutionary way. The new software solution will facilitate order input, without the need for employee intervention, from an artificial intelligence (AI) adapter that will work on any modern restaurant point of sale (POS) system.

Restaurant delivery orders from third parties, such as Grubhub and UberEATS, have fast become one of the most significant growth areas in restaurant takeout. The current technology to receive orders, however, is cumbersome and operationally expensive for restaurants to manage. This dilemma has spurred software companies, like orderTalk, Inc., to invest time, talent and energy into developing a more efficient solution.

"Many restaurant brands work with sometimes more than 20 delivery marketplaces, each one having to supply the restaurant with a tablet to receive the orders," said Patrick Eldon, CEO of orderTalk, Inc. "From there, the process becomes even more chaotic, with employees needed to constantly monitor these tablets and input orders into the POS system by hand. As anyone might imagine, the process of housing and monitoring tablets is time consuming, costly and prone to hman error, which defeats the concept of timely and quality food delivery entirely."

With nearly 20 years of restaurant POS integration experience, orderTalk was in a unique position to understand these challenges and solve the problem. From the outset, there was an intrinsic understanding that the traditional POS integration via an application program interface (API) was not suited to the delivery marketplace model for many reasons, including the cost, time and ongoing attention to updates this type of integration would require. Instead, the company set out to find an order-delivery solution independent of back-end POS integration functions or APIs.

The result is revolutionary technology that facilitates order input from any external source through a single AI adapter. The software is self-sustained through machine-learning and dedicated to supporting digital customer needs without continuous human intervention. Restaurant operators will be up and running within an hour or two by using the interactive trainer module.

"This new patent-pending technology solves the cumbersome order-delivery process that has plagued the industry," said Eldon. "Specifically developed to support universal plug and play POS integration, the technology not only eliminates the restaurant's burden of managing multiple channels of incoming digital orders, but ensures accuracy, efficiency and a single point of contact for maintenance and support. There is no doubt that this is groundbreaking and disruptive technology for the industry, not just for restaurants but for marketplaces too."

    About orderTalk, Inc.

orderTalk, Inc. is the original provider of online ordering systems for restaurants worldwide offering expedient, dependable and secure online ordering software solutions. Since 1998, the company has utilized proprietary remote ordering software as well as mobile and social media applications to meet the expanding needs of the restaurant industry. orderTalk's sophisticated food ordering systems and software solutions are designed to leverage business growth through stronger sales, higher check averages, decreased overhead costs and a higher customer satisfaction level. Timaru man jailed for running 'drug supermarket' from farm

A Timaru man who ran what was described as a "drug supermarket" has been jailed for six-and-a-half years.MYTCHALL BRANSGROVE/STUFF

A Timaru man who ran what was described as a "drug supermarket" has been jailed for six-and-a-half years.

A Timaru man who ran a "drug supermarket" supplying a range of Class A and Class C drugs from a farm has been jailed for six-and-a-half years.

Mark Andrew Edmond, 45, was convicted and jailed on charges of possessing and supplying methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, LSD, ecstasy, amphetamine, cannabis and hashish, all with intent supply.

He was also convicted of cultivation of cannabis and two charges of receiving.

Judge Joanna Maze said Edmond had been living on a farm near Timaru.

When police executed a search warrant they found a hydroponic cannabis growing set up consisting of 36 mature plants for harvest.

In a second operation they found 46 smaller plants, along with a bag containing 3.65 grams of methamphetamine.

Police also located $3600 in cash, 657 LSD tablets with a street value of nearly $20,000, as well as other quantities of methamphetamine, cannabis, ecstasy and 4.63 grams of amphetamine.

Judge Maze said along with the drugs police also found empty plastic "point" bags, scales, methamphetamine pipes, tick lists, stolen firearms, a smoke grenade and a knife.

"The Crown describe it as a supermarket and it is a valid comparison," Judge Maze said.

"Police found a range of stock on shelves, police found cash had been taken ... you were running a range of stock over a considerable period of time.

    Ad Feedback

"This was offending totally different from the subsistence offending of an addict in a carpark or on a cellphone trying to get rid of a small amount that had recently come into his or her possession."

Judge Maze said Edmond had "no significant problem with alcohol and drugs".

"The rather unfortunate consequence of that is the conclusion that it was done purely for cash."

Judge Maze said the starting sentence should be seven-and-a-half years, the upper end of the prison term suggested by the Crown,

She took into consideration the "considerable amount" of money saved to the public purse by Edmond not taking the case to a jury trial, and gave him a 12 month discount for his guilty plea.

    INDICATIONS

Kamagra is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Kamagra increases blood flow to the penis, allowing more blood flow into the penis, like happened naturally, when a man is sexually stimulated. With more blood flowing in and less flowing out, the arteries in the penis enlarge, resulting in an erection.

    INSTRUCTIONS

Use Kamagra as directed by your doctor.

  • Take Kamagra by mouth with or without food. Kamagra may not work as quickly if you take it with a high-fat meal.
  • Kamagra is rapidly absorbed. Maximum effect occurs between 30 to 120 minutes of taking the tablet.
  • Kamagra can help you have an erection when sexual stimulation occurs. An erection will not occur just by taking a pill.
  • Do not take more than the recommended dose or take it more often than once daily, or as directed by your doctor.
  • If you miss a dose of Kamagra and you still intend to engage in sexual activity, take it as soon as you remember. Continue to take it as directed by your doctor.
  • DOSAGE

The recommended dose is 50 mg, taken as needed, approximately 1 hour before sexual activity. Based on effectiveness and tolerance, the dose may be increased to a maximum recommended dose of 100 mg, or decreased to 25 mg.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Kamagra.

    STORAGE

Store Kamagra at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from moisture, heat and light. Store Kamagra out of the reach of children.

    MORE INFO:

    Active Ingredient: Sildenafil.

    Do NOT use Kamagra if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Kamagra
  • you have been advised by your doctor to avoid sexual activity because of heart problems
  • you are taking nitrates (eg, isosorbide, nitroglycerin) in any form (eg, tablet, capsule, patch, ointment), or nitroprusside
  • you use certain recreational drugs called "poppers" (eg, amyl nitrate or nitrite, butyl nitrate or nitrite)
  • you take another PDE5 inhibitor (eg, tadalafil, vardenafil) or another medicine that contains sildenafil.
  • Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Some medical conditions may interact with Kamagra. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a deformed penis (eg, cavernosal fibrosis, Peyronie disease), blood cell problems (eg, leukemia, multiple myeloma, sickle cell anemia), or any other condition that may increase the risk of a prolonged erection (priapism)
  • if you have a history of a prolonged (more than 4 hours) or painful erection (priapism)
  • if you have a history of certain eye problems (eg, macular degeneration, optic neuropathy, retinitis pigmentosa, sudden vision loss in one or both eyes) or hearing problems (eg, ringing in the ears, decreased hearing, hearing loss)
  • if you have a history of liver or kidney problems, lung problems (eg, pulmonary veno-occlusive disease), high or low blood pressure, ulcers, bleeding problems, heart problems (eg, angina, aortic stenosis, heart failure, irregular heartbeat), or blood vessel problems
  • if you have a history of heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening irregular heartbeat, especially within the past 6 months.
  • Some medicines may interact with Kamagra. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Alpha-blockers (eg, doxazosin), medicines for high blood pressure, nitrates (eg, isosorbide, nitroglycerin), or nitroprusside because severe low blood pressure with dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting may occur
  • Azole antifungals (eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole), H2 antagonists (eg, cimetidine), HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir, saquinavir), macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), narcotic analgesics (eg, dihydrocodeine), or telithromycin because they may increase the risk of Kamagra's side effects
  • Bosentan or rifampin because they may decrease Kamagra's effectiveness.
  • This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Kamagra may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

    Important safety information:
  • Kamagra may cause dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Kamagra with caution. Do not drive or perform other possible unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Kamagra may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
  • Patients with heart problems who take Kamagra may be at increased risk for heart-related side effects, including heart attack or stroke. Symptoms of a heart attack may include chest, shoulder, neck, or jaw pain; numbness of an arm or leg; severe dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach pain, or vomiting; fainting; or vision changes. Symptoms of a stroke may include confusion, vision or speech changes, one-sided weakness, or fainting. Contact your doctor or seek medical attention right away if you experience these symptoms.
  • Kamagra may rarely cause a prolonged (eg, more than 4 hours) or painful erection. This could happen even when you are not having sex. If this is not treated right away, it could lead to permanent sexual problems such as impotence. Contact your doctor right away if you have an erection that lasts more than 4 hours.
  • Kamagra does not stop the spread of HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to others through sexual contact. Use barrier methods of birth control (eg, condoms) if you have HIV infection or an STD.
  • Kamagra will not prevent pregnancy. If your partner may become pregnant and you wish to avoid pregnancy, be sure to use an effective form of birth control.
  • Kamagra may uncommonly cause mild, temporary vision changes (eg, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, blue/green color tint to vision). Contact your doctor if vision changes persist or are severe.
  • Rarely, an eye problem called nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) has been reported in patients who took Kamagra. This may lead to decreased vision or permanent loss of vision in some cases. If you notice a sudden decrease in vision or loss of vision in one or both eyes, contact your doctor right away.
  • Sudden decreases in hearing and loss of hearing have been reported in some patients who have taken Kamagra. Sometimes they also noticed ringing in the ears or dizziness. If you notice a sudden decrease or loss of hearing, contact your doctor right away.
  • Do not use other medicines or treatments for ED while you are taking Kamagra without first checking with your doctor.
  • Use Kamagra with caution in the elderly; they may be more sensitive to its effects.
  • Kamagra is not recommended for use in children.
  • All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects.

Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome:

Ancient Babylonian Tablet May Show Early Trigonometry, But Some Experts Are Dubious

Say you lived 3,700 years ago in the ancient city of Babylon. And say you're feeling industrious, so you decide to build a terraced ziggurat with a whole lot of complex ramps and terraces and staircases. No problem! All you'd have to do is find the ratio of the sides of some right triangles in relation to each other — oh, but wait. That would actually be really hard to do because the ancient Babylonians didn't have trigonometry (basically, the study of triangles). In fact, trigonometry wasn't invented until the ancient Greeks figured it all out 1,000 years late—

    —hold please—

Hm. Well, thanks to a new interpretation of an ancient tablets, the ancient Babylonians may have known trigonometry after all. Maybe.

A new study published in the journal Historia Mathematica finds that a small clay tablet called Plimpton 322 might actually be a trigonometric table — a tool that allows you to use a single known ratio of the sides of a right-angle triangle to figure out the other two ratios. Based on the type of cuneiform script used on the tablet, Plimpton 322, discovered in the 1920s in southern Iraq, is suspected to have been written sometime between 1822 and 1762 B.C.E.

For more than 70 years, researchers thought the slab — 5 inches wide and 3.5 inches tall (13 centimeters wide and 9 centimeters tall), and containing a table with four columns and 15 rows — displayed lists of Pythagorean triples. Those are sets of whole numbers that fit the equation that says the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle will equal the sum of the square of the other two sides. (You remember the Pythagorean theorem, right? a2 + b2 = c2) The problem is, nobody knew why these people would have gone through the trouble of writing these down.

Daniel Mansfield, a mathematician in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, stumbled upon Plimpton 322 while trying to dig up some examples of ancient mathematics to use in a first year math class. Looking over the tablet, he decided something was missing from the explanation that the tablet was just a list of Pythagorean triples — he and co-author Norman Wildburger were sure this was trigonometry.

"Our research reveals that Plimpton 322 describes the shapes of right-angle triangles using a novel kind of trigonometry based on ratios, not angles and circles. It is a fascinating mathematical work that demonstrates undoubted genius," said Mansfield in a press release. "The tablet not only contains the world's oldest trigonometric table; it is also the only completely accurate trigonometric table, because of the very different Babylonian approach to arithmetic and geometry."

Studying how trigonometry was done a thousand years before trigonometry was "invented" by the Greek astronomer Hipparchus has the potential to open new doors for math research and education. It might be that their method for trigonometry was superior to our own in some ways. And interestingly, the ancient scribes of Plimpton 322 seem to have used a base 60 system for arithmetic, like our time clock, rather than the base 10 number system we use today.

"With Plimpton 322 we see a simpler, more accurate trigonometry that has clear advantages over our own," said Mansfield. " "A treasure-trove of Babylonian tablets exists, but only a fraction of them have been studied yet. The mathematical world is only waking up to the fact that this ancient but very sophisticated mathematical culture has much to teach us."

However, not everyone is convinced that this interpretation of Plimpton 322 is accurate. Math and science writer Evelyn Lamb, for instance, sees it as colored by a desire to justify "rational trigonometry," which in her Scientific American math column Roots of Unity she calls a pet theory of Wildburger's, and one not readily accepted by the mathematics community.

"[Plimpton 322] demonstrates differences in the way different cultures have done mathematics and outstanding computational facility," she writes. "It has raised questions about how ancient Mesopotamians approached calculation and geometry. But using it to sell a questionable pet theory won't get us any closer to the answers.

And Eleanor Robson, a Mesopotamia expert who in the 1990s proposed in a paper Words and Pictures: New Light on Plimpton 322 that the tablet was a sort of teacher's guide, also finds flaws in the new interpretation.
