Apple iPad Pro: Powerful tablet, more engaging

The Apple iPad Pro now has a smaller 9.7-inch version. The larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro was arguably the best tablet and maybe the most productive, giving tough competition to the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. However, that isn't one everyone can afford, neither is it a size everyone can handle. That is why the new version is important. And I think it is the best tablet so far. Here are five reasons why:

This is the perfect size: The first iPad Pro is a great device if you can use that extra real estate to make great sketches, 3D graphics or video. However, not everyone needs that extra space. Most users just need the power and dependability that comes with the Pro and that is where the 9.7-inch version is perfect. It is pretty much the same device in a smaller frame. Also, this is the most popular size for iPads, given that it was launched is this frame.

It is the most powerful tablet: There was one thing I thought was not possible to do on a tablet and that was making pages for a print publication. But now that I have seen that too being done on an iPad Pro, I am convinced tablets can be as productive as laptops. What prevents us from using tablets more effectively is our servitude to muscle memory and involuntary resistance to try something we are not used to. From a technology perspective, tablet like the iPad Pro no longer offer resistance. I think the young mobile generation would have no such problems with these devices.

The best camera in a tablet: I still don't find a good use for a camera in a tablet. But this camera is very useful for those who use scanning apps to digitise a lot of documents as part of work. Apple engineers seem to have had that use case at the top of their mind while designing this camera. And the camera does wonders with text, patterns, texture and other such details, while offering a good landscape shot too.

Great battery life: On 4G, the iPad Pro gave me over 12 hours of active use, and that is better than any personal computer will give you at the moment. Since both can do the same stuff more or less, this is a great advantage for those who want a new mobile computing device for daily use. The battery lasts longer if you are only on Wi-Fi.

Superb screen, best-in-class audio: The iPad Pro carries forward the legacy of its predecessor when it comes to audio quality. The two versions without doubt have the best audio quality in any mobile device, including notebooks, that I have tried. Coupled with the Advanced Retina Display, this becomes one of the best entertainment packages in town. This is one aspect where the larger iPad Pro has a slight advantage, but that wouldn't matter.

But this is not for everyone. Here is why:

It's not cheap: You are paying a premium for the iPad Pro and the 32 GB, Cellular + Wi-Fi version costs a neat Rs 61,900. So you have to be pretty sure that you need a Pro version of the iPad. Otherwise the iPad Air is a decent device on its own and should suffice your requirements. Plus, the Pencil and the Keyboard too come will cost you around R20,000 more and that is integral to getting the best out of this device.

The keyboard takes getting used to: The 9.7-inch iPad Pro

obviously uses a smaller keyboard than its big brother. So there is lesser space and I found that accuracy was compromised. Being someone who can type real fast on the iPad screen I struggled with the keyboard and was soon using the screen again. Yes, the keyboard will grow on you and you will get better at it. But then it might be a good idea not to spend more on this for now.

Should you buy?

The new iPad Pro is a great tablet for second generation users, those who have been using an iPad for a few years now and wants to upgrade. And this applies to even those thinking to iOS after using an Android tablet. This is certainly not for casual users and the price should clear any doubts to that effect. Otherwise this is the best tablet ever, one that can replace your laptop.

Estimated street price: Rs 61,900 (32 GB, Cellular + Wi-Fi version)
