My Favorite Tech Purchase of 2016: Eero Home WiFi System
In recent years, I've more than likely gone through more routers than any normal person ever should. You see, since I sit at a desk in my house all day long using the internet, I can tell almost instantly when my internet has slowed or something isn't right. For the longest time, I blamed routers and so I replaced them regularly whenever something new came out. I now know that it has always been Comcast that was the problem (shocker), but through all of those changes to equipment, I was led to an upstart WiFi system that has inspired a whole new wave of routers for consumers. Even Google has jumped on board. I'm talking about the Eero Home WiFi System, which I now consider to be my favorite tech purchase of the year.
What is Eero?
As you are now well-aware, thanks to Google WiFi making it more mainstream, the future of consumer routers appears to be the modular type that create mesh networks throughout your house. The idea is that a single router may not be good enough to cover every corner of your house, so growing your network as is needed makes a lot of sense. Plus, the UIs and controls over the classic routers haven't changed much over the years and offer pretty terrible experiences. Doesn't it make more sense to be able to control everything from a polished, always up-to-date app? Also, don't we want routers that update with new tech and software and features, all of which make them better the longer we own them? That's sort of where Eero comes in and kills it.
With Eero, you get a router system that starts out with a single, well-designed squircle (square+circle) box that's about the size of an Amazon Echo Dot. If your house is around 1,000 square feet, you could get by with a single unit. However, if your house is bigger than that, or you'd like the opportunity to hardwire additional routers to internet-connected devices in other rooms, you can expand the network with additional Eero boxes. Eero sells as single packs, 2-packs, and 3-packs.
The magic in Eero comes from the TrueMesh technology they use, where your set of units is constantly talking to each other to try and find the best path for data to travel to achieve the fastest possible speeds and best connection. All of these smart router systems are in on the mesh technology aspect, but Eero thinks their proprietary version is the the best in the business (of course). Also, unlike range extenders, Eero units have two radios each, so as they pass signal around to additional units, you won't necessarily see any drastic speed drops. Plus, as you move throughout your house, your phone or tablet or other connected devices automatically switch to the nearest Eero to get the best connection.
Setup
One of the other joys of an Eero is the setup process. Rather than plugging in a router to a modem, logging into a terrible web interface built in 1999, and then attempting to manually configure whatever needs to be done for your specific connection, Eero works the opposite. Instead, you download the Eero app, plug-in your first unit, and then they talk to each other to get setup. From there, you can name the network and set a password. Then, you take additional units through your house, plug them in, and Eero will tell you if the signal is strong enough or if it should be moved. And that's pretty much it. After your Eeros are in place, you manage the rest from within their really nicely designed app.
My setup includes a main unit connected to modem in my office, a second unit attached to my living room TV, and a third upstairs in my master bedroom connected to an NVIDIA Shield TV. There are walls and stairs and lots of obstructions, all of which Eero doesn't recommend you have. Still, I get solid speeds throughout my house, no matter which unit I'm connected to or which frequency.
Above, you'll find three separate speedtests run, each while my Pixel was connected to a different Eero. In the first, you have my Pixel connected to the main unit over 5GHz. In the second, you have my Pixel connected to my living room unit over 5GHz. And finally, the third is my bedroom at 2.4GHz. The speeds hold up pretty well (particularly the upload speeds) from room to room and unit to unit. Also, for reference, my Comcast is 250Mbps down and 30Mbps up.
Software
As someone who just admitted to being overly anal when it comes to my home internet connection, you probably already know that I love the Eero app. With this app, you not only get a refreshed in-app speed test, the ability to setup family profiles, guest network controls, and frequent updates, you also get to see all sorts of information about the devices attached to your network.
For example, you can see how many devices are connected to your network, which Eero unit they are connected to at the moment, how strong their connection is, what the connection type is (2.4GHz, 5GHz, or wired), and what their IP and MAC addresses are. You can even set a nickname for each device, plus Eero keeps track of previously connected devices, including when the last time was that they were active.
Outside of individual devices, the Eero app shows you information about each Eero unit too. You'll get information on model and serial numbers, likely for support issues, what the connection type is, where it's located, the software version, and a toggle to turn the LED light off or on. But they also tell you the MAC for each ethernet port (they have two ports each) and the two WiFi BSSIDs. There is a ton of info here.
Should you run into network issues, your Eero app will show you which Eero unit is down and offer some support to diagnose the problem.
If you want to put your advanced network skills to the test, Eero does offer some access to ISP or static IP settings, plus DNS, DHCP and NAT, UPnP, and port forwarding controls.
I should also point out that just recently, Eero pushed out a massive update that included a lot of what I just mentioned. While this stuff shipping out of the box months ago would have been appreciated, this also shows the benefit to buying a product like this in that it will get better over time, just like your smartphone does.
Other Benefits
One of the features I really appreciate about Eero is the fact that each unit features two ethernet ports. That allows me to hardwire devices in other locations in my house that previously were always only ever connected to the internet through WiFi. In theory, that should provide a much better or at least more stable connection. In my testing over the past few months with this setup, it certainly seems to have offered a much better internet experience around our house.
Ever since we cut cable and subscribed to Playstation Vue, we stream everything. If we aren't watching Vue, we're streaming a movie through Google Play or HBO NOW or Netflix. Everything we consume through a TV now is done over the internet. By hardwiring our main TV in the living room and NVIDIA Shield TV unit in our bedroom, those connections that get used the most have been rock solid.
And I get it, in a way, a unit connected to a TV in my living room is still technically connected through WiFi (Eero to Eero), but instead of being connected from a router over WiFi from a distance, it's now hardwired to an Eero that is connected to another Eero. It's a pretty neat little trick.
Overall
Eero is most definitely a product that has made our house smarter and more efficient in the internet department. I can manage our network from anywhere through the app, monitor issues (if it's having any that I will always now blame on Comcast), and geek out a bit about how cool my WiFi setup is when people come over. I'm also a huge fan of updates that bring new features, which is something that seems to happen regularly.
Outside of phones, Eero is my favorite tech purchase of 2016, probably by a lot.
Should you buy Eero?
Here's the tough part. As much as I love my Eero system and would love to recommend one to all of you, that's going to be tough. Eero was one of the first out of the gate modular, mesh-powered WiFi systems and I jumped in early. I made the substantial investment, which at the time was $499 for a 3-pack. The problem is that as others have come in to play at lower prices, Eero remains the most expensive.
Before selling out, Google WiFi – which is basically the same thing, yet powered by Google's bank account – could be had as a 3-pack for $299. That's $200 cheaper than Eero, plus it's a Google product that does most of the things that Eero does, has a sweet app, and will likely only get better and better, possibly with cool Android or home automation tricks as Google improves it to work with Home and Assistant. Also, you could buy Luma (another competitor) today for around $300, plus it comes in different colors too.
My suggestion is that if you are in the market for a new router and want to go with one of these trendy new WiFi system options, know that Eero is a great product that you'll thoroughly enjoy. However, there are other options out there, including Google's that you should take a serious look at in order to save a couple of hundred bucks.
If you are interested in Eero, which really is a great product, you can buy it from places like Amazon and Best Buy.

A motherâs Craigslist plea brings her kids a Christmas theyâll never forget
Donnell Booker Jr. tore through the wrapping paper on Christmas morning, revealing a seven-inch Kindle Fire and a smile nearly as wide.
"This is my tablet," the 8-year-old said. "My tablet. Who got me this?"
It wasn't his mother or father, even though they were dressed as elves.
"We don't know," said his father, Donnell Booker Sr. "It was someone very generous. That's all we know."
The tablet showed up one day last week after Booker's mother, Tyshika Britten, posted a message on Craigslist saying her family of five boys and a baby girl were facing eviction from their home in Oxon Hill, Md. There probably wouldn't be Christmas gifts, maybe not even a tree.
"I'm such a failure right now," she wrote. "Please help me."
Her message, thanks in part to a Washington Post article about her family's troubles, went viral, generating hundreds of offers to help from around the world. Someone sent a PlayStation 4. Someone dropped off a puppy.
And someone named Eddie Vedder sent a check for $10,000.
"Is he in a band?" Britten asked.
Pearl Jam, Google told her. When the bank teller saw his name and the amount, his head dropped into his hands. The family has been watching his concerts online.
"I was just so moved by the story and what this mother did for her children," Vedder said in an interview Sunday. "I thought those kids must be so proud of their mother for reaching out. That takes a lot of courage."
Vedder said he saw some of his own childhood in their story.
"There were years there were toys from Santa, but they were used and they came from garage sales and they didn't always work," he said. Vedder knows there are complex social issues beyond the range of his check, but he wanted to provide, as he put it, "a tourniquet" to help the family gain some control and normalcy.
A Christmas with presents helps, too.
Britten watched her kids tear the wrapping off video games, shirts, remote-control cars, winter coats, science sets, Legos, footballs, basketballs, and more — arriving at all hours in dozens of UPS truck deliveries, which was a new experience for the family. They have never ordered anything online.
The elves took the packages to the basement, where they divided them up and wrapped. And wrapped.
"Oh my Jesus, oh my Jesus, oh my Jesus," 15-year-old Vashon said, unwrapping the PlayStation.
Chase, 3, gave a play-by-play of his presents.
Opening a car, he said, "A car." Then he dropped it.
Opening a truck, he said, "A truck." Then he dropped it.
Morgan, his 1-year-old sister, cradled a new baby doll. Asked the baby's name, Morgan laughed.
The puppy, named Phoenix, looked tired. Nearby, hanging on the wall, was a sticker that read, "Bless the God Before Us And the Love Between Us."
As they unwrapped the love, Britten suspected the hate was waiting for her on social media and in messages from a GoFundMe page she set up because people were requesting a way to send cash.
Online trolls have questioned her parenting ability and demanded she "close her legs."
A friend on Facebook offered support.
"Don't let the devil mess with your head," she wrote.
Others criticized Britten for exposing and embarrassing her family. But the hairdresser and Booker, her longtime boyfriend and a struggling construction worker, don't hide their financial problems.
Anyway, it would be impossible: They've moved multiple times and once ran a hose to a neighbor's home for water.
"I'm not exposing my family," she said in front her children. "I'm exposing how a lot of people have to live. There are people all over this country who have the same problems we have. This is real life."
Now the family is hoping this windfall — in addition to Vedder's check, the GoFundMe page has raised nearly $18,000 — will give them, as Britten put it, "a head start" at securing a stable living situation. The landlord wants them out and is planning to visit them Tuesday, probably marking the end of their Christmas miracle.
They have dreams of buying their own home, of not living in the dark and cold in winter to conserve money for rent, of owning cars that don't require the Lord's Prayer to start.
They have regrets but don't dwell on them.
"We are not perfect people," Britten said. "We have made mistakes and that's life, that's what happens."
And they think that in asking for help, and getting so much of it, they have given their children a present they can all share — a message that, no matter what, life is life and love is love.
"I am a proud mother of six," she said. "I love my children. And I will take care of them, and I will get them what they need, any way I can."
Torn wrapping paper was strewn everywhere. Outside, one of her sons squirted a toy fire extinguisher. The others were trying on new clothes, setting up their games, opening batteries for remote-control cars.
Britten took it all in.
"This year," Britten said, "they got everything they wanted."

Electronic Devices Can Lead To Youth Health Problems
But like most kids their age it's not always easy to get them outside, especially when they have attention grabbing devices like an iPad.
It's pretty rare to see a kid *not entrapped into the world hidden behind the screen of an iPhone, iPad, tablet or other electronic. But for Maleia and Max , especially this time of the year, they would rather be shredding fresh snow than sitting at home playing games.
"We come out here on Christmas because there is a lot of stuff to do. You can go in the park and on the trails, there's some trails over there and you get to spend time with your family," Knutson said.
While it may be difficult living in a state where the weather can be less than cooperative, Sanford Pediatrician Aaron Zylstra says you still have to get out.
"It's not so much the activity that you' re doing, it's the activity that you're not doing. So when you sit still your metabolism sits still. You don't get it revved up.Then the really big thing for children is habits last your lifetimes," said Zylstra
In a study by the American Journal of Pediatrics they found nearly 20 percent of children spend more than 5 hours a day on a device like a cell phone or tablets increasing their chances for obesity by almost 50 percent.
Zylstra says find way to be creative during the winter holiday.
"The best thing to do is do it as a family, whatever you choose," said Zylstra
He says if you're going to give your kids some time for their devices set limits.
"You have to ask to be on it and you only have a certain amount of time on it." said Knutson
After all the making memories with your family is what the holidays are all about.
"Being here and getting to go down the hill with your parents," said Knutson

Need help with ROM mod problem on Galaxy Tab 10.1
So here's what is going on:
I got this old Galaxy Tab 10.1, (GT-P7510) for free. I decided to flash a new ROM onto it, and used Nameless KitKat 4.4.4. After doing this, the device receives a constant "keyboard has stopped functioning" error, and no longer connects to my PC for MTP, although it still charges. After some research, it seems like I either flashed a corrupted ROM, or accidentally installed the wrong version of GAPPS.
Google Voice also doesn't work, so no voice to text either.
As far as possible connections go, if the device is in download mode, Odin detects it. Kie also can tell that it is there in this mode, but won't connect.
I've also managed to get the device online by using the calculator to copy and paste a password for my phone's hotspot. The device is discoverable in my network places on my PC, but I can't access any of the files, or drop any in over wifi.
I have a stock ROM backup in case I didn't like the modded one, but unfortun ately it is sitting on my PC and not on the Tablet. The tablet also does not have removable storage.
Anyone have any ideas, or did I just manage to create a useless brick?

What Tablets & Smartphones Are A Bigger Threat To Our Children Than We May Realize
Written by Alanna Ketler
We all know how skilled children are with electronic devices. We see toddlers, who haven't yet mastered the art of walking, that seem to have been born with an innate understanding of how to properly launch apps and play games on mommy's cell phone or daddy's tablet, or even their very own 'kid friendly' device.
It's likely you've seen a young child acting out at a restaurant or throwing a tantrum. Their mom or dad quickly rummages through their things to pull out a tablet and hand it to them. A tablet or smartphone just may be the most technologically advanced pacifier we've ever seen — and it is almost guaranteed to work.
But at what cost does this come for our children? Are there potential risks that we are not yet aware of? Is using a screen to keep your child busy and entertained actually damaging them or delaying their social development?
Psychologist Sue Palmer Offers Some Insight10 years ago, Sue Palmer wrote a book called Toxic Childhood, which warned of the dangers too much screen time posed for children's physical and mental health. It seems her vision was true. According to Palmer in an article written for the Daily Mail:
"My fears have been realised. Though I was one of the first to foresee how insidiously technology would penetrate youngsters' lives, even I've been stunned at how quickly even the tiniest have become slaves to screens – and how utterly older ones are defined by their virtual personas."
On average, children today spend between five to six hours a day staring at screens, whether on their smartphones, tablets, computers, or televisions. Many do double duty, watching television while surfing the web on their phone or computer.
Children have embraced technology just as quickly as it has evolved, and parents are finding it difficult just to keep up, never mind control it. Because this kind of portable (and addictive) technology is still relatively new, today's children are much like guinea pigs in an unwitting experiment — the longterm effects of which have yet to be discovered.
Palmer, along with other experts in childhood development, has seen a rise in prescriptions for Ritalin, the drug most commonly prescribed for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. A four-fold increase in less than a decade, in fact. This is certainly something to take note of.
We can likely even see these attention deficit issues in ourselves as well. Not so long ago, we would read lengthy articles with ease or sit down and watch a five minute video thinking it was a fun way to pass a brief period of time. Nowadays, we still want the information, but we want to receive it as quickly and efficiently as possible. We often only read titles or headings for articles and assume we know the full story, and unless a movie is really captivating, we may even find it difficult to sit through the whole two hours without grabbing for our smartphone a few times just to mindlessly scroll through our newsfeed.
According to Palmer's research, excessive screen time can be linked to obesity, sleep disorders, poor social skills, aggression, depression, and under achievement in school. This leaves little wonder that the recent boom in smartphones and tablets has coincided with the weakening of mental and physical health of children of all ages.
More research showed that 10% of children under four are put to bed with a tablet or smartphone to play with as they fall asleep. Another study showed that of families with young children that also owned tablets, one third of the children under three had their very own tablets to play with. Baby shops even sell specific merchandise designed around tablet use, such as 'apptivity seats,' which a tablet can be slotted into to keep toddlers entertained.
You may be surprised to know that Steve Jobs did not let his own children have iPads. Had this information gone public, perhaps other parents would have explored his reasoning and followed suit.
How Else Is This Epidemic Affecting Children? The problem isn't just that screens are affecting our children, or what they are doing while on them — indeed, one could argue that much of their screen time includes playing educational games that teach math, art, or spelling — but rather, and most importantly, these screens are replacing experiences that they would likely otherwise be having in real life. Experiences that will shape them for the rest of their live.
Today's children have far fewer opportunities to really play, and to learn through experience — to learn through making mistakes. They are missing out on a critical time of social development, a time when they should be learning how to get along with their peers and how to interact with adults and authority figures.
Screen time is also eliminating the need for imagination, which is one of the most exciting gifts a child possesses.
Palmer says:
But real play is a biological necessity. One psychologist told me it was 'as vital for healthy development as food or sleep'.
If the neural pathways that control social and imaginative responses aren't developed in early childhood, it's difficult to revive them later. A whole generation could grow up without the mental ability to create their own fun, devise their own games and enjoy real friendships – all because of endless screen-time.
Playing helps children develop initiative, problem-solving skills, self-confidence, perseverance, and resilience. And playing with other children is essential for their emotional development, helping them develop empathy and compassion for others. Through play, children learn firsthand how the world works.
So, What Can You Do?According to the American Academy of Paediatrics, children under two years of age should not be given any screen time whatsoever. Above two years of age, they advise no more than two hours per day.
Play with your children. I know we are all endlessly busy keeping up with the rigours of modern life, and giving your child a tablet while you prepare dinner, or do laundry, or shop for groceries, or complete any other of the thousand tasks you face each day, affords you some much-needed time. But, assuming they are old enough, consider including them in these activities. Do what you can to encourage them to ask questions and learn without a screen in their face. Our children are the future decision makers and leaders of this Earth. Let's help to ensure they do the best job possible.
Much Love
