Surface Pro 3 AC Chords Recalled For Catching Fire, Microsoft Tablet Problem Sparks Panic

(Photo : Microsoft) Surface Pro 3 owners are being made aware that the device's power chords are being recalled by Microsoft due to heating issues. Older tablets, like the Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro, are also impacted. Eligible products must have been sold before March 15, 2015.

Surface Pro 3 owners have been warned by Microsoft about a product recall on the tablet's AC chord. Reports of faulty power cables have caused consumer panic.

The news comes to Design & Trend via the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website and official confirmation from Microsoft. Both outlets detail the risks behind the problem.

According to the source, there's evidence of 56 cases where power chords have either overheated or caught fire when used with the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 2 or the original Surface Pro. An additional five tallies allege electrical shock dangers as well.

With that data solidified, Microsoft has decided to recall the faulty accessory for all those that request a replacement. The official statement lists AC power chords for the aforementioned tablets only if they were sold before March 15, 2015. To clarify, similar products like the Surface Pro 4, Surface RT, Surface 2 and Surface 3 are not affected. Nor are any related accessories that aren't included in the box. This issue only applies to older devices in the Pro line. Regardless, estimates reveal that millions of consumers around the world are eligible.

Ironically enough, this recall began two weeks ago under the assumption that Surface Pro power chords were being easily damaged in normal use. It's only in recent days that tech enthusiasts have learned about the flammable problems we're discussing now.

Despite being part of Microsoft's last-gen hardware portfolio, the Surface Pro 3 has been making headlines frequently for tablet enthusiasts over the past few weeks. A recent firmware update led to problems on the software end by causing blue screens, freezes and boot failures. Support staff was quick to rectify that snafu with a driver-based solution, but the present recall situation will likely prove to be more complicated.

To reiterate, impacted power chords are only listed for tablets in the Pro line that are Surface Pro 3 and older. The current model Surface Pro 4 has been deemed safe for use.
