Apple, Microsoft tackle the problem with tablets: they’re too advanced for their own good

SOME of the world's biggest technology companies are facing an unusual and costly problem: their products are proving too good to replace.

Sales of traditional tablet computers are falling in Australia and are tipped to drop further, even though their use and usefulness has never been higher.

Apple and Microsoft are now planning a tablet comeback, with both launching new products this month, but analysts are still debating what it will take to get tablet buyers in store and spending again.

Australians bought 1.64 million tablet computers in the last half of 2016, according to technology consultancy firm Telsyte, most of which were Apple iPads.

But iPad sales fell nine per cent during that period, and Android tablets tumbled 13 per cent.

Telsyte managing director Foad Fadaghi says only two-in-one-style Windows computers grew in popularity, as people sought to replace their laptops with something more versatile.

"Tablet sales have slowed since their peak in 2013 as fewer Australians have seen the need to replace their existing devices," Fadaghi says.

"However, this is changing, with support for older models ending and functionality of newer tablets improving."

Australians were most likely to upgrade their tablet for a computer they could also use for work purposes, Fadaghi says, or if the software on their existing tablet was no longer able to be updated.

As such, Telsyte is forecasting "modest growth" in tablet sales this year, he says.

But the picture is not as rosy worldwide. Gartner expects tablets to continue to fall in popularity, dropping 8 million sales this year compared to 2016, and down 12 million by 2019.

Apple plans to turn these predictions around with two new high-powered iPads.

Chief executive Tim Cook launched new iPad Pro models at its annual developers' conference — one with a bigger screen inside a similarly sized body, and another with a 12.9-inch display.

In addition to being entertainment devices, they are designed to substitute for laptops, with more processing and graphical grunt, as well as new software that will show off the iPad's file system for the first time, and add a host of multi-tasking features.

When iOS 11 software is released in spring, users will be able to create file folders, for example, and drag photos or text from one app into another.

"iPad has completely changed the way we work, play, teach, learn and create," Cook says.

"We've been pushing the boundaries on iPad and … we're going to push them further than ever before."

But as Apple tries to win over buyers with more businesslike features, Microsoft is moving in the opposite direction.

Its new Surface Laptop will come with a new operating system called Windows 10 S that uses apps rather than programs, taking a leaf from Apple's iOS playbook, and increasing its battery life.

The 13.5-inch, $1499 laptop is designed for students but it's likely to win a wider audience, particularly after Microsoft's Surface devices beat Apple for customer satisfaction in JD Power's recent Tablet Satisfaction Survey.

JD Power service industries vice-president Jeff Conklin says the fact Surface tablets "are just as capable as many laptops" won approval from the most buyers.

Nevada has a marijuana problem: There's not enough marijuana

"We didn't know the demand would be this intense," Al Fasano, co-founder of Las Vegas ReLeaf, said Tuesday. "All of a sudden you have like a thousand people at the door. ... We have to tell people we're limited in our products."

In declaring a state of emergency late last week, the state Department of Taxation warned that "this nascent industry could grind to a halt."

As bad as that would be for marijuana consumers and the pot shops, the state has another concern: tax revenue. A 10 percent tax on sales of recreational pot _ along with a 15 percent tax on growers _ is expected to generate tens of millions of dollars a year for schools and the state's general fund reserves.

With about 100 growers in operation across Nevada, there is plenty of wholesale marijuana. The crisis has to do with distribution and state rules over who is allowed to transport marijuana.

In the run-up to last year's state referendum over legalization _ which was overwhelmingly approved by voters, allowing people aged 21 and over to buy or possess up to an ounce of marijuana _ the state's powerful alcohol lobby worried that legalized weed would cut into liquor store sales.

So in a concession to the alcohol industry, the ballot measure stipulated that for the first 18 months of pot sales only wholesale alcohol distributors would be allowed to transport marijuana from cultivation facilities to the dispensaries.

When legalization took effect July 1, nearly 50 dispensaries _ all of them already in the medical marijuana business _ had been licensed to sell recreational pot. But no alcohol distributors had been approved to transport it.

The state Department of Taxation, which regulates legal marijuana, said it had received about half a dozen applications from alcohol distributors but that none had so far met the state licensing requirements, which include background checks and security protocols.

As a result, the dispensaries have had to rely on marijuana already in stock.

Dispensaries and state officials had anticipated the problem, and in late June the Department of Taxation attempted to loosen the licensing rules to allow dispensaries to transport their own marijuana.

But a District Court judge blocked the request, arguing that the state needed to go through the regulatory process to determine how many distributors were needed. The state appealed the decision to the Nevada Supreme Court.

In the meantime, the Department of Taxation proposed emergency regulations aimed at expanding the pool of potential distributors.

Deonne E. Contine, executive director of the state agency, wrote in the state of emergency declaration that the industry would be unable to function "unless the issue with distributor licensing is resolved quickly."

Gov. Brian Sandoval, who did not support legalization, has authorized state officials to hold a hearing Thursday to establish emergency reforms, including speeding up the review process for transport licenses and allowing cannabis companies to move pot if they meet certain requirements.

All four of the other states where recreational pot is legal _ Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Alaska _ allow the dispensaries to transport marijuana themselves, with no privileges given to alcohol distributors.

"It is important that the distribution issue gets resolved, because if it is not sales will be halted completely," said Riana Durrett, executive director of the Nevada Dispensary Association, a nonprofit that advocates on behalf of retail pot shops.

Many Nevada dispensaries had stockpiled marijuana before legalization took effect.

"We bought as much as we could hold ahead of legal sales beginning," said Fasano, whose dispensary is less than a block from the Las Vegas Strip and sells mainly to tourists.

The state dispensary association estimated that in the first four days of legalization customers bought between $3 million and $5 million worth of pot. The state is not scheduled to release its numbers until the fall.

Tanya Lupien, vice president of sales and marketing at Medizin Las Vegas, said Tuesday that her dispensary was running low on "grab and go" items such as marijuana edibles and vape pens, and that without a resupply the business stands to lose tens of thousands of dollars a week.

"We need expanded regulations to have business as usual," she said.

This month, on the first day of recreational sales at Oasis Medical Cannabis, a block from the Strip, employees scurried around with tablet computers, like Apple store clerks, fielding questions from patrons about Pure Haze, Fire Angel and other pot strains.

The co-founder, Ben Sillitoe, was excited to see customers lined up around the building. But now all that demand is presenting a challenge.

"We need to place orders to avoid running out of stock on popular items," he said Tuesday.

Eve V tablet hits shipping delays, may get screen upgrade as a result

The Eve V tablet is basically what you'd get if Microsoft had polled run a series of surveys asking users what they want before shipping a Surface tablet. Because that's pretty much exactly what Eve Tech did when designing this crowdfunded tablet, which had been set to ship earlier this year.

Obviously the company didn't meet that estimated ship date, which is pretty much par for the course when it comes to crowdfunded devices. But Eve did show off finished prototypes to journalists recently, and it did show up at the FCC in June, so it looks like the tablet is almost ready to go.

So what's the problem? According to an update at the Eve Community website, there've been a problem getting screens for the tablet. But while resolving the issue could take some time, it could also result in a better tablet than expected.

Here's the deal: the first batch of screens weren't up to snuff, and the supplier has been slow to provide new screens.

So Eve is turning to the community again and asking what to do next. One option is to wait things out and see if the distributor eventually comes through. Another is to request a refund and switch to a different screen.

The latter option means the Eve V tablet probably won't ship to backers of last year's crowdfunding campaign until August or September at the earliest. But when it does, it may have a 2880 x 1920 x pixel display instead of the promised 2736 x 1824 pixel screen.

If Eve goes with a 12.3 inch option from Sharp, the new screen could also be more energy efficient, consuming half as much power as the current option. Eve is also looking at a 12 inch screen from AUO, which is also said to have lower power consumption.

Both options would be more expensive than the current screen, but Eve says that would only affect future tablet sales. The new screens would be a free upgrade for folks who've already paid for a tablet through the Indiegogo campaign.

It's still a little unclear whether simply asking the community what it wants is a better way to design a tablet than doing market research. Sometimes people may say they want features they don't actually use. And plenty of potential customers won't bother to participate in optional surveys. But one upshot of the way Eve is designing this tablet is that the company's been pretty transparent about the reasons each piece of hardware was selected… and it looks like Eve is also being fairly transparent about reasons for delays.

Woman smuggled cannabis and tablets into Stockton jail facing escalating drug problem

THE government has branded the issue of drugs in prisons as "unacceptable" as a woman has been spared a term behind bars for smuggling tablets and cannabis into a jail facing escalating drug use.

The sentencing of Levi Middleton, of Penrith Street, Hartlepool, for taking drugs into Holme House Prison, in Stockton, came as Ministry of Justice figures revealed 225kg of drugs and 13,000 mobile phones were found in prisons last year.

The haul of contraband seized in prisons, which also included 7,000 mobile phone sim cards, illustrates the scale of the challenge facing prison officers who have had to cope with staff cuts and increased violence over recent years.

Rachel Masters, prosecuting at Teesside Crown Court, said Middleton, had been visiting her then partner in the category B jail - inmates for whom the Prison Service says escape "needs to be made very difficult" - on December 20 when the pair were watched on CCTV by staff.

The inmate was subsequently taken to a private room at the jail, which houses up to 1,200 inmates, and initially refused to open his mouth or talk, but then spat a plastic package on the floor.

The item was examined and found to be a mixture of cannabis and a handful of tablets.

The court heard 22-year-old Middleton acknowledged her guilt after being charged with supplying class B and C drugs.

Andrew Teate, mitigating, said the defendant had been put under pressure to take the package into the prison.

He said: "When she attended the prison to see her partner he was black and blue, having been given a good roughing up by fellow prisoners.

"He indicated it was because of a deal he had not complied with while he was at large on the outside."

The barrister said Middleton later received a number of threatening calls and individuals "targeted her house".

"They were clearly being directed from a custodial establishment," he said.

Middleton was said to the primary carer for her mother, who suffered from epilepsy, and Mr Teate urged Judge Tony Briggs to suspend any jail sentence on her.

Judge Briggs spoke about the "rife nature" of drugs in jails and gave Middleton an eight-month jail sentence, suspended for two years. She will carry out 80 hours unpaid work in the community and was given a 20-day rehabilitation requirement order.

There have been numerous recent cases relating to drugs at the Stockton prison, which mainly serves communities of the Tees Valley, South West Durham, East Durham and North Yorkshire.

An inquest into the death of Christopher Hope, of Crook - who was found hanged in a cell at the jail, having taken the psychoactive drug Spice in July 2015 - is set to conclude this week.

Last month, a court heard Stacey Alderson, of Tenth Street, Horden, had acted under "extreme duress" and had received threatening phone calls when she smuggled 24 tablets of buprenorphine into the prison in her bra. The drugs were detected by staff using CCTV cameras.

In January, Teesside Crown Court heard Melanie Kemp, 51, claim she had been ordered to hand cocaine and a designer drug which triggers hyperstimulation, paranoia, and hallucinations to her son, David in the jail or her car would be burnt out and home targeted.

Judge Morris told Kemp, of Pipeknowle Road, Stockton: "The prison officers have a tough job, and it is tough enough without you adding to the crime going on in our prisons. The public are rightly aghast and amazed that drugs get into prison, and when drugs get into the prison system, they are used as currency by inmates."

Last September, the court heard Sarah Boylan, 45, of Brierton Road, Middlesbrough, took Subutex tablets into Holme House, in Stockton, during a visit to her boyfriend.

It was announced in December that Holme House, which gained the status of a Reform Prison last year, would receive £9m over the next three years to enable prisoners to be drug-free in prison and on release.

In April, the prison's Independent Monitoring Board stated in its annual report: "Due to overall pressure of numbers in the prison an increasing number of prisoners who have no desire to give up drugs are being housed on the wing. This is having a detrimental effect on the wings original function, ie to encourage prisoners to come off drugs."

Prisons minister Sam Gyimah acknowledged the issue of contraband being smuggled into prisons would not be resolved overnight, but praised the efforts of staff to tackle the problems and highlighted the Government's recruitment drive to increase officer numbers.

He said: "I have been clear that the current levels of violence, drugs and mobile phones in our prisons is unacceptable. Bringing in more frontline staff is an integral part of that.

"The number of prison officers in post is on the rise, meaning we are on track to achieving the recruitment of 2,500 officers by 2018."

Peter Dawson, of the Prison Reform Trust, said the figures were "eye-watering" and called on the Government to tackle the demand for drugs in prisons.

"Life in prison for many many people is simply too idle, it's enforced idleness, it's boredom, there's no hope," he said.

"Some people are going into prison with a drug problem, and some people are starting to use drugs as a way of coping."
