Women are always looking for quick and fast solutions to their skin problems with countless products to choose from.

But we we may be subjecting our bodies to the effects of chemical-based products that can actually end up causing lasting damage to the skin.

Sydney based skin expert Charlie De Haas says that using naturally derived products is better for the prevention of future skin problems like adult acne, rosacea, inflammation, dry skin and the ageing process.

Ms De Haas told Daily Mail Australia the best natural alternatives to chemically based skin products.

    BETA-CAROTENE

Healthy glow: Increasing beta carotene in diet can prevent needing advanced beauty treatments like botox

This compound is found in bright orange and red fruits and vegetables like carrots, melons and pumpkins.

Antioxidants from these foods help with achieving a healthy glow.

Ms De Haas said increased beta-carotene intake replaces the use of advanced beauty treatments like botox.

'What you want to do is fill your body with as much antioxidants as possible and then in turn they will fight the ageing process,' she said.

    GREEN TEA EXTRACT

Green instead of bean: Drinking green tea instead of coffee will boost anti-oxidants and hydrates skin

    CHEMICALS TO AVOID
  • Parabens, known to cause cancer, particularly breast cancer and can be disruptive to the hormonal system, like all the below.
  • SLS - found in most foaming soaps, and SLES
  • DEA
  • Hydraquinone
  • Propelene Glycol
  • Formaldyhyde
  • Phthalates
  • Green tea has anti-oxidants designed to fight free radicals that cause internal damage and speed up the aging process.

'What we want to do is we want to fill up our body with as many anti-oxidants as possible and give our bodies the best fighting chance,' Ms De Haas said.

She added that green tea and naturally derived skin care products with green tea extract can replace chemical based peels and anti-aging creams.

The skin expert also said that replacing green tea with coffee is also beneficial for as it helps hydrate the skin and prevent adult acne.

    LICORICE

Calming: Naturally derived liquorice or liquorice tea can help reduce skin problems like redness or rosacea

As a natural alternative to treating skin redness, inflammation and rosacea Ms De Haas recommended liquorice tea.

'Liquorice is calming, soothing and it can help to repair that barrier so that the skin can do it's job correctly and monitor what is absorbed into the skin cells so it helps with preventing adult acne,' she said.

'The main thing I would recommend is liquorice tea, liquorice ingredients in skin care or naturally derived liquorice candy.'

However she was quick to note that the effects are not necessarily the same for liquorice candy pieces because they contain higher levels of sugars and carbohydrates.

    VITAMIN B (LIQUID GOLD)

Essential nutrient: Increasing vitamin B through tablet, liquid form or in skin products replenishes dry s kin

Skin redness, irritation, eczema and dry skin is also a sign of a vitamin B deficiency, according to the skin expert.

Ms De Haas said vitamin B is an essential nutrient that replenishes the skin barrier but is also known as an anti-stress vitamin.

'Studies are also showing that vitamin B3 and B6 can help with depression as well - that's why I call it liquid gold, it's a little bit of happiness in a bottle,' she added.

She also said increasing vitamin B intake through tablet, liquid form or in skin products, replaces barrier creams, skin repair products and products that chemically rebuild skin.

    VITAMIN C

Slows ageing: Increasing vitamin C intake boosts collagen production and slows down the ageing process

Increasin g your vitamin C intake is necessary for the production of collagen which slows down the age process, sagging and dullness in skin.

'Most people think of collagen as just the collagen in the skin cells, but they don't realise that the capillaries, what transports our blood, is made up of vitamin C,' Ms De Haas said.

Supplements, citrus fruits or using any kind of facial mask with vitamin C replaces chemical based anti-ageing serums, botox and fillers.

She also stressed the importance about looking for naturally derived rather than the chemical products or products that sit on the shelf.
